After I pull the keys out of the ignition and open the door, the chime comes on thinking I've still got the key in. I've got to fiddle around and wiggle the **** out of the ignition and sometimes it'll stop
I was reading in another thread that there's a ball bearing to tell if the key is in or not? Could that ball bearing be sticking?
Is it going to hurt to spray some WD40 in there and see if that frees up the ball bearing? If not I'll open up the steering column
There is a small switch inside the key lock that is probably bad... had the same problem on my wife 97 cougar..Took the lock apart and found a bad connection on the switch.. Fix it without replacing the switch..
My guess is the plastic clip that holds the dinger in place broke. If you remove the bottom half of the steering column cover you should be able to see the wire and either tape up the end of it so it doesn't ding anymore or try to glue it back together.
Many of us cut the wire to disable the dinger. Just make sure you've got a spare key handy until you get used to no dinger.
Just fyi, "tearing the steering column apart" only consists of three phillips screws and a button to pull out the ignition switch.
It's easy to fix, thankfully. I have been thinking about killing mine, because when i'm working on the truck I like to have the stereo on, but don't want the glow plugs and fuel pump running at all, so i turn the key back to the accessory position, and if you leave the door open it never stops dinging..... ugh...

Sadly, killing the black wire w/ pink tracer won't kill the chime in the ACCESSORY position. Been there, done that. You have to remove the chime in the GEM to fully disable it. There is a write up on this, but I haven't bothered to do it. I rarely use ACCESSORY right now. Read this https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/3...y-quiet-7.html Post # 105
