Loud Knock

Was up at the cabin yesterday snowmobiling. Temps got way down (around -20) and my 99 would not start. Put the heater on it, plugged in the block heater, charged the batteries and after a few cycles of the glow plugs and cranking for a bit it fired off sounding like it does on any other cold day. Let it warm for about 15-20 mins and shut it off because i was running somewhat low on fuel. 10 minutes later i restarted it and let it idle for another 15min before i took off. Drove 10 miles to get fuel, pull in and pop off my gas cap and all of a sudden a LOUD knocking noise is coming from the drivers side. I thought a rod let lose it was so damn loud. Still idled fine so i decided to put the sled trailer on my dads truck and drive it home. The loud knock went away after about a mile, but the truck runs very similar to when one of my injectors failed a month ago. Shakes under heavy load bet when wound out it seems to clear up a little.

Any words of advice would be appreciated!

How low on fuel did it get? Maybe you ingested air into your fuel system.

^^^^ What Dan said.

But the air should work out over 50 miles or so. If not, you may want to pull the VC and check the pushrods.

Fuel was not that low, low fuel light had just come on. My gauge read 1/8 of a tank and at that point i usually have 5-6 gallons left atleast.

Alright i saw another post while searching that was very similar to my situation that had bent pushrods. Thought a valve might have stuck but the truck was only at idle for a few seconds?

When the stock fuel pickup begins to fail, it can "run out" of fuel at 1/4 tank.

That still leaves the poorly designed fuel pickup in the tank intact where you can suck air in at 1/4 tank. It will purge the fuel rail quickly when you fill up tho....

Good point. That may explain the knocking going away after a mile or so... but now it runs like crap just like when my injector failed. Maybe i should just dump some 911 in there and see if that helps quick.

Thanks Mike I appreciate it!

I think I'll try some easy stuff first but i just wanted some opinions at first... with that terrible of noise i didn't want to cause anything catastrophic. Might have to run it on the AE once again. If the fuel additive doesnt fix it i'll pop off the valve cover and have a quick look also. What a week to have something go down... -'s all week.

Yeah i'd say. Now the question is why. Wet stacking is my assumption because this happened after sitting for a few -17 degree days. However i read a post by Izzy that wet stacking is not possible on the newer generation psd's? Now idk what to think. I did make the rookie mistake when i swapped injectors the first time and forgot to bleed the cylinders.... didnt even crank though. Possible they had a slight bend from that, and just took a while to let loose? truck did seem to run slightly strange.. with just like a tiny miss noticable unloaded at 2000-2300rpm.

I thought wet stacking was from excessive idling, not from being parked for several days cold, subscribing. Anyways, you found the problem fast.
