it seems many have gone 200k miles on a E40D.
im going to maintain it good and see how it goes.
since it will make me $.i wont care if i can only get 100k.
$400-600 from the salvage yard and another 100k,if possible, i wont mind that.( 1 month truck payment today right lol)
then i'l sell the truck and get into another lower mileage truck.
now if they only go me 50k miles,i wont be happy.but i don't think anyone thinks they're that bad.
4th gear is nice to have for economy.(provided the trans can hold up for work, for 100k miles.)
i wont use 4th with loads on.this should help.plus i have a good cooler,and external filter,and shift kit installed.
flush every 30k and new filters.

now ask me again in 5 years and i might be with starmilt and say, stay with the C6 or get a stick lol.

that is what i was thinking but just making sure. Does anybody know year the c6 ended and the e4od began? Is the e4od really not good or can i get away with it? I think that my f150 had an e4od and it started shifting really hard and would buck the truck around at 170000 and was beaten the last 10000 (first truck i had to have some fun). There are so many 1990-1993 f350 7.3 srw 4x4s for a pretty good price.

the f150's used the AOD 4 speed trans right starmilt?
that's a light duty 4 speed there.my dad has that in his older 95 150.it only hit 100k before it started acting up.still going tho oddly for another 50k.haha,so even that is not so bad i guess.
(tho, you know,i dont think he changed the fluid even once lmao, now that im thinking of it.so even that one-tho only behind a 302,shouldn't even be working still but is.)

oh ok cool well thats good news cuase when i got it i had no problems what so ever beside rust in the chamber (300) Then after doing a allot of fire wood runs and a few long burnouts (highschool) it started shifting hard so i sold it for 200 less then i got it for.

Climber if you fine an idi truck in good condition that has been maintained any of them is dependable and will work for you. At some point they upgraded the E40D,I'm not sure when, the only idi I have with an auto I bought for a parts truck.
I would not base my choice on a particular truck as much as what kind of shape it is in.
The reason I suggested a 4x F250 or 350 with a 6.9 and 4sp or c6 is you can find nice ones at reasonable prices and the 6.9 is almost immune to cavitation so no suprizes needing a motor and the 4 spd is almost indestructable if you use a little sense, and the C6 is tough and you can have it rebuilt for 500 or so.

My driver is a 86 F250 4x4 6.9 with a turbo 4spd,adually kit and gearvendors overdrive, now this truck has always until now been in the southwest and never had a spec of rust.
It is basically a toy it really does not work any more and has new paint. Unless I wreck it or something bad happens to it I will rebuild the motor when it goes bad then It will probably last me the rest of my life.
BUT you can never get one to where you will quit I have a ZF5 that I am thinking about installing that would give me double overdrive so then I could drop down to 4.56 gears
With 10 forward gears I would have a gear for anything and eventually I will run across a deal on a D60 I can't refuse so you see how these trucks go they never let you quit.

The AOD was replaced by the E4OD even in F150s. I think there are some years where the AOD or AODE and E4OD overlap in the F150s (I want to say early to mid 90s, but not sure). Internally, the F150 E4ODs are very similar to the F250 versions, but they are not rated for the same amount of torque and have many "tweaks" that make it more suited for a lower torque engine (and very poorly suited or a diesel or other big torque engine).

Never had any problems with my AOD and it shifts faster than any auto I've seen, but conventional wisdom says that the E4OD is still stronger in an F150. I love the AOD because its all mechanical and can be built up. They SAY the AODE is better but I still prefer my older one.
