I'm trying to figure out why a PO would cut a square hole in the driver's side floor just above the brake master cylinder. Other than the cutout, the floor is rock solid. Is there some kind of accessory that might need to be hooked up at this location? There are several features about the truck that make me think it might have been a utility or oilfield service truck.
Someone later patched the hole using sheet metal screws and a rusty piece cut from another truck so the master cylinder cover plate was in place when I bought it. It's laying on top of the transmission cover in the attached photo.
I agree with 52 Merc and Bob. Have you ever tried fitting your hand through that hole to unscrew the master cylinder cap inorder to fill it with brake fluid? It's a hard thing to do.
I'd bet he was going to put in a dual M/C. Their lids are 2x the size of a stock cap.
There's no problem removing the M/C cap if you use a socket on an extension, or lay under the truck and do it with a crescent wrench. If you want a list of truly ugly jobs, I can provide a list.....
PS -- is the clutch pedal disconnected in the picture? If not, something is seriously wrong with one of the pedal linkages.

Yes, the clutch was disconnected when the picture was taken. After I took the picture, I removed the transmission cover and pulled the transmission. If this cold snap would end I could remove the cab next weekend and be pretty much done with disassembly.
