Ok I am a aircraft electrician, but Vehicles and extension cords are not much different.
I use a 12 ga 3 wire as my extension cord, I have seen cords melt and catch fire due to pulling to many amps through the cord (that is why they get hot).
I highly recommend inspecting the wiring on your truck and your extension cord.
Look for partial breaks, kinks, exposed wires/missing shielding. All of these elements can and usually will cause a power cord to fail.
If your extension cord gets hot go with a larger ga cord. Also if you need to run 50 feet +, go with 10ga or larger.
I hope this helped.
