The tranny in our 1996 f250 powerstroke, automatic(E4OD), started to have problems shifting, so we paid $2000, 5 weeks ago to have a rebuilt one,and T.converter put in. We have driven it less than 400 miles. Just last night the old symptoms returned: the truck is in first gear, but it feels like its in neutral, and sounds as if its erraticly going back and forth from first to second. Will not shift out of first! This is exactly what it did before we replaced the first tranny! We believe its an electric issue, but its not showing any codes.. .any thoughts would be appreciated
hey there and welcome to FTE! you will find MANY helpful tid bits here and some great guys that have seen and done mostly all of it.
im certainly not a guru in trannys, but who did your tranny for you? i certainly hope you got a warranty! youll have to go to a shop and have them set up a scanguage on your truck and go for a test drive with a rep so they can set you in the right direction. mabe you have a pump issue. i know you said it only goes in first now but does it slip?
was this all at once or slowly over the 400 miles?
migh thave a planetary gear issue possibly?
is your OD light blinking? if so that will set a code so a good scantool will know whats wrong
Does it feel more like it starts off in 2nd gear and will not
upshift or just upshift to 3rd.
If that is the case its in limp.
Can you manually shift 1,2 and 3?
This happened all at once, just like it did the last time( when we got it rebuilt). And yes we have a one year warranty. The shop suggested a new tranny the first time, but it seems as though its going to turn out to be something else, and mabey we didnt need a rebuild in the first place, so we arent in a hurry to go back to them just yet....The OD button is missing, and the light has never worked. We are replacing the whole arm/button this week. The truck is throwing no codes. and the day after we encountered this limp issue (or whatever it is), it has completely stopped, and is performing better than ever, like it never happened. Mabey it was hot? Who knows, but its very confusing!
Well for tranny relate issues it doesn't set a CEL it blinks the of light unless you hAve checked with a scan guage and there's still no codes then I don't know. A problem like that will not just disapear it will resurface again . It kinda sounds like an intermiten sensor of some sort, possibly a bad range sensor, truck doesn't know what's goin on.
