We have a 1992 F250, 7.3 Diesel with the E4OD Tranny (automatic).
When the OD light on the shifter starts flashing (again), the tranny shifts real hard. We've taken the truck to our tranny guy (for a couple years now) and all we get from him is that the only thing his computer reads is that the Throttle Position Sensor is bad. It gets replaces and then we're back with the same problem several months later. Got to where we change the sensor ourselves the last 2 times. This can't be right.....
Any idea as to what's wrong?
We were also told that the 1992/1993's were the first years for the Code thing and that it's guess work reading the codes on our 1992. Is this right or do we need to find a new tranny guy?
when the trans shifts hard that is called limp mode.its there so you smoke a clutch pak when theres a prob.mine was doing that because of a bad torque convertor.had 136 ,000 on it.plow truck ya know.sprung for a jasper reman,$3,000 installed.then it did it again this time was rpm sender.the codes arent guess work but maybe your trans guy is.
A bad TPS can cause the tranny to set a DTC and flash the OD light. The hard shifting occurs when the computer sets a transmission code. As noted above, the "failure management mode" is intended to protect the transmission.
If the TPS keeps failing are you buying OE Ford parts or are they cheap crap from Autozone? If you are using the good stuff then you may have a wiring problem. Your tranny guy should have figured this out by now. Get a new one.
I am having the exact same problem with an E40D trans. I tried replacing the TPS but it didn't change anything. Any suggestions?
thanks
Gerry
