!993 Ford Explorer Transmission Problems

!993 Ford Explorer Transmission Problems
I have a 1993 for explorer with tranny problems.
The overdrive went out first. We decided to change the fluid in the transmission and also changed the shift modulator. Didnt help at all... We drove it pretty hard to see if we could get it to shift...and It didnt work.
The next morning I was driving to work ..got off the highway and got stopped at a light. It turned green and I went no where. I recall before all this happened...before I got on the highway I heard a whining, almost like a supercharger.
Now it just sits...It will still engage gears and shift fine for about a mile then I start hearing the whining again.
Any Ideas?
