Talking 93 Explorer A4LD O.D. question

235,000 miles - original motor

Truck came from my parents who had a rebuilt transmission installed about 2 years ago - truck has only gone about 15k miles since.

The transmission will not stay in overdrive even on a flat surface - will only roll to OD going downhill. My 1994 will stay in OD even on a moderate uphill grade.

Thoughts?

3-4 shift is electronically controlled. 1st thing I'd probably do would be to pull codes from the computer (even if the CEL isn't coming on, it only takes a few minutes and a paper clip is a sufficient tool to get the codes out of the computer). If there are any fault codes in the computer, then resolve those in case they are contributing to the 3-4 shift problem. If you get pass codes, then I'd probably hook up a voltmeter across the solenoid and test drive it to see if the computer is commanding it to drop into 3rd or if the transmission is doing it on its own.

Sounds good - I will pull the codes and see what's there.

OK - checked the codes with my Auto x-ray5k and it returned a code 629 during the KOEO test - "Torque converter clutch solenoid circuit failure" - Oh crap - that sounds like fun

also a code 111(passed)

Does this refer to the control circuit that activates a solenoid or is the scanner looking for hydraulic pressure in the transmission after the sol valve actuates?

Also - KOER code 536 shows up - "Brake on/off switch circuit failing" - I had read somewhere that can cause issues with the TCC lockup?

KOER 536 is often operator error. Immediately after engine id is output, the PCM expects to see you press the brake pedal. Usually, this code is a result of neglecting this step. If you know you did it, then you need to inspect the BOO circuit (and, yes, the BOO signal is important in the computer's TCC lockup operation algorithm).

KOEO 629 points to a fault in the TCC solenoid circuit. This computer doesn't monitor any of the hydraulics, so it only refers to an electrical fault. My experience with these is that it is either a full open in the circuit, or a short to ground. TCC solenoid circuit is a pretty basic DC circuit, so this should be pretty easy to track down with a voltmeter and a wiring diagram.

Update - BOO would not close and the flasher relay had failed - replaced both. KOEO 629 is now gone. I have no idea why....

KOEO is all PASS

KOER 536 is still there - I think it's a timing issue of when you press and release the brake during the test - I get the same result testing my 94 explorer - as you mentioned above, it's probably operator error.

Back to my orignal issue with OD - I will check the 3-4 shift control as you suggested - I will check my print regardless, but off the top of your head, what is the best spot to check the signal while test driving?

I really appreciate the advice.

If you do it carefully, I always thought the easiest place to access these circuits was by backprobing the computer's 60 pin connector.
