Yes, AC volts will give you a very different reading from DC. 
On "AC", you will only read the unfiltered (by the battery capacity) "ripple" from the diode pack.
It's insignificant unless you hear it in sensitive communications equipment. Then it's just "annoying"!
How many miles on your rig? I'm trying to keep a mental average of alternator life. So far, it's (very) roughly 140,000 miles or so before the brushes wear out, which is virtually the only failure mode for those with stock power demands.
