Coolant Question

I am preparing to replace the EGR cooler hose on my truck. I have only had it 3 months and the dealer did a coolant flush when I bought it. That being said I do not want to drain the block. How much coolant does it hold if I just drain the radiator. It is an 03 F-350 CC LB 6.0 FX4

Use pre-mix and you don't have to worry.

Buy 6 qts and take back what you don't need.

Did the dealer do the flush properly? It is a royal pain to do.

Why not add a coolant filter while you are at it?

The rad might hold around 2 gal? Just drain it into a clean bucket/pan and re-use it. Agreed with coolant filter also.

Gearloose,

The dealer did do the correct flush I am positive on that. I bought it from the dealer who sold it new and serviced it all of its life. The OASIS was basically flawless. It had been reflashed and the alternator was replaced. I searched long and hard to find one that was well maintained, this one was 250 miles from home. As for the coolant filter, that is the very first thing on my list to do. I figure that I can get by until summer when I have some more income. I am a 19 year old in college and money is a little tight. Thank you for the quick reply.

D8- I never thought about re using the coolant. I will probably do just that.

Am I correct in thinking that if the coolant level is below the EGR cooler I wont have coolant going everywhere. I expect to have some residual. -Joe

OK, whatever you do, be aware that the 6.0 traps air like there is no tomorrow.. so be ready to check it every few days and top up coolant as needed.

Somewhere on here is a guy that strung together a home brew coolant filter from a bunch of cheap NAPA parts that work just fine.

Why don't you go ahead and try to do the same.. no need to buy a custom kit.

Coolant filtration is not rocket science.

Come to think of it... if you can do it.. I might too... I too, am trying to run a 6.0 on a shoestring.

No offense to anyone but this is the wrong drive train to run on a shoestring! Shoestrings break too often and that is what can happen to the 6.0.

No. 1 cause of high operating costs:

Lack of proper maintenance. Oil, coolant, and other fluid and filter changes.

Lack of factory software updates.

No. 2 cause

Failure to fix factory bugs.

- eg coolant filter to catch casting sand / grit

- fixes of EGR cooler

No. 3 cause

Overloading / overweight towing

"Mods" like chips, tunes, etc.

If (3), were not done, and maintenance specified were done, the engine is not bad.

If all 3 issues were avoided, cost of operation of 6.0 is roughly comparable with any equivalent medium duty diesel.

Unless you got unlucky......

BTW, above is from a through review of the service record of my vehicle from the dealer, the service shop that did most of the work, and it represents the experience of 260,000 miles of operations.

The engine has never been overhauled.

How do I go about getting the air out of the coolant system so that I don't end up with an air lock situation.

Gearloose- I will check out that homemade coolant filter. Heck I bet we might have enough spare parts lying around to make one. What you have said about the reason for the 6.0's problems is so true. It seems that if it is well cared for and not abused it is a great engine. Thanks for all of the help- Joe

Just be sure to use the NON-SCA filters.

The only way I know how to get the air out of the system is to drive it. Check the level after to drive it a few times and make sure to top it off the correct level.

To directly answer your question, if you drop the lower radiator hose and let it drain until it stops, you will need to replace right around 3.5 gallons.

Just drive it. I don't think the 6.0 is difficult to purge. The high mounted degas bottle takes care of it for you without any problem. Just watch the level over the first couple of heat/cool cycles and add as needed.

Thanks a million guys! I am going to tackle this when the weather lets up a little here. It has been sub zero temps all week. It isn't too much fun to work on things in this temp. Thanks Again - Joe
