I recently purchased a 2000 E.B expy and could not wait to get some snow to see how well it would do in the N.E. Ohio winters. It has the auto 4wd/4hi/4lo setup, when I would turn the switch to 4hi no light on but the fronts would spin the auto seems to work ok. Today I tried the 4hi again and the light came on but no 4x4 so I switched to auto 4x4 and the light will not go out. Also tried 4lo and the light would not work. any suggestions would be appreciated
When you put it in 4 low did you have it in neutral and your foot on the brake ? If you don't do this it won't shift into 4 low, you also need to do this to get it out of 4 low.
Try this, with the key on but the motor off and your window open, put your foot on the brake, then put it in neutral. Then turn the switch to 4 low and listen, you should hear the shift motor run underneath the vehicle. Then switch it back to A4WD, and you should hear the shift motor run again. There could be other things wrong if you don't hear it running, but from what I've seen in this forum, it's fairly common for these motors to go bad. This is what the motor looks like.
Thanks for all the help, the transfer case motor was the culprit, and it only cost me about $65 after core charges. I did have to pull about 6 wires out of the factory plug and put them into the new plug (thanks to my buddy Joe and an alldata wiring diagram). It was not as bad of a job as I thought it would be. Im glad i fixed it today we have gotten about 4-6 inches of snow now im ready, bring on the snow!
