I'm going to be buying a mid 60s to early 70s shortbed F100 soon. Anyway, regardless of what it starts with, it's going to be treated to a 460 swap that will be pushing about 500-525 hp and close to 600ft/lbs torque. My question is what factory or aftermarket trannys will bolt up and handle this kind of power. I prefer manuals, but I'll stick with an auto if I buy a truck originally equipped with one. And, my mentality is the more gears the better (to a point). If I had my wishes, I'd put a Richmond gear 6sp. manual behind the 460, but I don't know if it would handle that much torque. Any input or ideas are appreciated. Thanks.
I'm not up on all the speed and aftermarket stuff but from what I used to read in the old Hot Rod mags etc. the C6 was always the box of choice. There were guys pushing full blown rods with dual engines using the C6. I'm sure it was beefed up quite abit but it's a solid start. There are probably more reliable people on this board that can guide you. LOL

Basically, you'll have to run a truck tranny to reliably handle that kind of power. That means a granny gear 4spd, the NP435 is the heaviest around. I don't know if you're planning to race it or buzz it down the strip but the problem with the NP435 is that it has huge throws and isn't for performance work. A c6 automatic would give the dependability you're looking to and would be good for racing if you're into that. If you're building it to tow, the manual would be the better choice.
