I was wondering if anyone has any experience with a 460 linked to a 6 speed manual tranny, like a borg warner T56 for example? I'm currently looking for a 65-73 F100 and have big block plans dancing in my head. If anyone has any ideas about this, I'd be happy to hear them. I think I'm safe in assuming that there was never a 6 speed manual linked to a Ford 460 from the factory, right? I guess I'll have to find an adapter somewhere... Thanks for your input.
what might be interesting is to find a newer transmission off a super duty truck, then give advance adapters a call and see if they have a adapter for it and if not they may decide to make one for you. dont know the number but i am sure a google seach would revael theair address. i too have been thinking about doing a swap to a manual 5 or 6 sped tranny, problem is i have an unrebuilt stock c6 that has just under a 100,000 miles and it is going to stay that way till it dies, then i will consider the swap but happy hunting nonetheless.

You might want to look for something designed for higher torque capability than the standard T-56. It's rated at 400ftlb and most big blocks will easily exceed that. The T-56 used in the Viper and Z06 are rated higher, but the cost could be a barrier.
You might check into using Ford's 6spd ZF from a dsl Super-Duty.
If they are like previous years the engine uses an adpater plate to make it a 460 bellhousing pattern. I just removed my 5spd ZF from my dsl and it has a 460 bellhousing, but the holes for the starter are not there.
Neal,
Have you thought about using a Tremec TKO or TR3550 trans?
Both are 5 speed trans (4th is 1:1, 5th is .68) and are
popular w/ the Mustang crowd. The TR3550 is rated to around
425 ft/lbs, the TKO to 490 ft/lbs). Unlike the T56, the Tremec's
don't have an integral bellhousing, so they bolt up to a normal
bellhousing (same boltpattern as the Toploader 4 speed). B/c the
input shaft on the TKO is a little longer, you'll need to get
an adaptor plate (goes between the bellhousing and trans).
Ford uses the TKO in the Cobra R. Superperformance uses TKOs in their new stroked 351, and 460 Cobras (they claim their 460s are pumping out 486-535 hp).

When Summit Racing built their QuikStang, with a blown 525 ci BB Ford, they put a TKO behind it. Allegedly this engine made 958 HP and 863 ft lbs.

I am currently running a TKO behind the 429 in my 1968 Torino,
and after two years it's still doing fine. The overdrive is
just sweet too!
You can score a TKO, shift-stick, DS yoke, and adaptor plate
from DarkHorse Performance (there are other places around the
web too). The TKO has the same bolt patterns, cross-member
mounting setup, and uses the same speedo gear as the Toploader 4 speed. It's pretty close to a bolt-in replacement for a four
or three speed. I just saw that someone on the 67-79 FTE forum
is installing a TKO in their truck too (they had pics).
Hope this helps.
