Tranny swaps
What would I need to do to get (is it possible also?) a 78 F150 with a M block engine with a C6 and NP 203 transfer case, changed over to a 4 speed with granny low? I want to use my 203 case, but change from my C6 to the granny low tranny. It's from a 77(?) F250 2wd, are the tailhousings swappable to mate a transfer case on the back?

as far as i know, the 4spd from a 2wd is different. a 4wd trans has a short output shaft that is splined to accept the transfer case.
i know the C6 came with a 203 or 205, but i have only seen a 4spd (NP435) with a 205, never a 203. they are definately different.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but, for the '73-'79 trucks all the Ford transfer cases used a circular bolt pattern and a 31 spline input shaft. The 2wd trannys are indeed different from the 4wd and would at least require an adaptor and maybe a tailshaft change. 4wd trucks of this vintage can have at least a T-18 or NP-435 ?? ( I'm not sure the New Process number is correct but the Borg-Warner is a T-18 ). I checked with a salvage yard and take out NP's go for $350 up, with rebuilt units in the 500-600 range. If you go the salvage yard route try and get everything from the bellhousing to the transfer case mount including the shifter. The salvage yard I went to was very helpful and reasonably knowlegable and was able to check their computor for prices all over the nation.
