I might add that while I wouldn't want a gun in each seatback, pilots should carry (perhaps even a requirement) and we should be able to carry. Back to the old west I say.

Possibly... but I thought it was worth mentioning as he wasn't voicing the typical argument - that profiling was a bad thing to do morally- but rather in his opinion it wouldn't be effective, or might even even make it easier for the terrorists to do their thing. I think he mentioned that the recent would-be bomber, being Nigerian, wouldn't have fit certain profiles...

I do agree with PowerStroke that it's a mistake to think they're dumb. The recent incident about the enemy monitoring the drone video feeds should be a wake up call - a wake up call that should never have been needed, BTW. Question: Who have thought that the video feeds might have to be encrypted? Answer: Anyone with half a brain...

For those drooling over aircraft, become a military pilot.
If ya like to wrench, become a maintainer. I did the avionics/engine mech/crew chief (crosstraining is fun) career path and had a blast.

As far as security, we'll still lose an aircraft now and then, just as we do to ordinary crashes. If our best friend dies in a car crash, we'd still drive to the funeral. Some risk is inevitable, but the danger of flying is utterly trivial.

If anyone wants to lose sleep over it, the guy who just did the "explosive adult diaper" was one-upped a while back by the booty bomber. Thanks to the internet we know the payload could have been disturbingly larger...

AQAP: Paradigm Shifts and Lessons Learned | STRATFOR

However, this is the first instance we are aware of where a suicide bomber has hidden an IED inside a body cavity.

No problem for me, I do not fly anymore...................Last time I flew in anything larger than a Cessna 182, it was on Uncle Sam's dime.

I agree 100%. I find it very troubling how much the police state has expanded under the guise of fighting "terrorism".

But in my opinion Muslims are generally decent people. Truth is you're more likely to be killed by an African American or an illegal alien than a Muslim. Of course you won't read that in the New York Times. And you should ask yourself why that is.

We lost our self respect a long time ago. The Muslims are just a scapegoat being put there for you by the same folks that are taking away your guns and shovelling trillions of your tax dollars into yet another banker swindle.

And that's all I can say on that right now, lest Horsepuller the Dragon blasts his hot breath on this thread and blows it into 'The Club'......
I'm holding my breath for now. I have to confess I am enjoying watching you guys pus<!>sy<!>foot around certain topics and and speak civily like we used to have to do in school. So I'm really hoping someone isn't temped to go full throttle in attempt to get it moved to the Club for chewing down to the marrow.

On top of that, I'd like to give vortilon a chance to speak more on the topic and his aviation experience. Also I do enjoy monkeywrench's posts and hate to cut either one of them off from this thread.

Thanks for allowing us some latitude Scott. I was afraid that mine may have pushed over the edge.

People in general are decent, law abiding God fearing beings. There are exceptions. Being killed by an African American or illegal alien more so than a Muslim is simply not a true statement. Most African American crime in America is black on black. Illegal aliens can't risk the exposure, but, radical muslims hate all Christians and westerners.

Racial profiling isn't the answer. 100% profiling is the answer. IMHO, everyone that expects to board an aircraft is subject to search and seizure weather peacefully or violently, I don't care.

Airport security isn't a sign of weakness, it's a knee jerk reaction to a long running issue. We need to be more proactive and less reactive.

So would the racial profiling you have in mind have made security take a closer look at this guy as a terrorist threat?

Hi Tim
I respect your opinion and some people really don't mind all the security. I just happen to be one that really thinks it's sign of weakness and fear to our enemies. A more proper show would be to have armed uniformed Air Marshalls on every flight rather than making Grandma take off her shoes. We are wasting money and giving the enemy the satisfaction of disrupting our lives. The money could be better spent with a show of force rather than searching millions of law abiding citizens. After all isn't the disrution of lives what they want? So I choose not fly commercial.

I make my living maintaining and restoring airplanes. I used to fly but have let my medical lapse. I am building a Light Sport catagory airplane that allows me to fly without one. It is a parasol scratch built 4130 steel fuselage with Cessna 120 wings mounted with eight degrees of sweep. I am modifing the wings to save 52 pounds. Here is picture or two and my web site.

Hey vortilon, thanks for the photos of your project and the link. I think you must have done the rudders for the Constellation at our local CAF. In Camarillo, CA. I have seen it airborne and it is a lovely sight.

I got my PP SEL ticket in 1980. My favorite plane to fly was the Belanca Citibria. There is just something about the sound of air passing around a fabric covered airplane and the lightweight simpleness to it. I haven't been current or held a medical since before 9/11. I hate to even think of all the FAR's I'd have to catch up with to get current today.

But actually, lately I have given some thought to getting current again. It would be neat to do that and then buy a ride in the left seat of the B-17 next time it comes around. Provided the PIC was a CFI, I may be able to log it as PUI training. How cool would that be to have logbook time in a B-17? Well maybe slim chance. But the CAF has a T-6 they sell rides in that I might be able to log time in.

I talked about the underpants bomber with the wife (who hates to fly the airlines anyway) and all the latest passenger restriction and inconvenience. I told her that when we retire, instead of flying the airlines or buying an RV to travel to Michigan in, we could get an airplane instead. She just rolled her eyes and laughed. I think that means "no way are you getting me into a small airplane again!"

if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and acts like a duck, there's a good chance that it may be a duck!
