Crazy idea, will it work?

Friend of mine has a 1995 Ford F150 reg. cab short box. He wants to swap his rear axle for a dually axle.

Is this possible? How much work is involved in this project?

It's a 1995 F150 300 Straight 6, 2wd 5 speed.

Thanks

its not alot of work like swapping a rear axle in any other thing

undo the brake line driveshaft shocks and ubolts then pull it out of the way and put the dually one under it.... and connect every thing....

u shouldnt have to change the leafs im almost 99.9999999% sure u dont have to but i already know someone will say u have to or if u want a dually go by one

*THOSE GD NAY SAYERS*

i would like to c pics when u get finished....

oh yea and to make it look really good get a ret of I beams from a f250 and put them under it coz i dont know if the spindles are the same size on the f150 and 250 models

then put some dually hubs on it so u can run the same wheels all the way around

As long as the dually axle is from approximately the same body style(s) it will work. The 10.25/10.5 axle swap into a bronco and 4x4 half ton is a popular swap.

Just so I can be: *THOSE GD NAY SAYERS*

Why doesn't he just get a dually?

John, the 2wd F150 uses 2.5"-wide leafs, the duallies use 3"-wide leafs, I don't remember how wide my dually spring perches are but I'll check on that when daylight comes - if they are 3" as I suspect your friend may have to do some grinding to narrow them down to match the halfton springs. Also he will need his driveshaft altered, likely shortened and with a different U-joint. He will also need a pair of dually fenders, he will be cutting off some of the bedsides and drilling holes for the fenders studs.

The axle should fit but I suspect there will be some wheel well carving to do to clear the outside wheels, just be aware that the presence of a 1-ton axle does not give the truck a 1-ton payload or towing capacity, everything else from the transmission to the frame and front end are still 1/2-ton parts. 1-ton front suspension will not simply bolt up under a 1/2 ton truck either, it's all very different despite looking similar.

Don`t forget to use an axle from a dually pickup not a cab and chassis,CC axle is much narrower and won`t fit under a pickup.
