I am pretty new to this list, and you guys seem to have alot of knowledge on these sweet ole trucks. I have my 77 F150 with a fresh rebuilt 400m, with 4 barrel and headers, about 100 miles on engine. My problem is that doesnt want to fire off in the morning. It cranks freely but doesnt seem to want to fire. I live in Alaska and it is 18 degrees here this morning, I plug in my block heater just to keep it warm. When it does finally fire off it runs fine and I can start it for the rest of the day with just a touch of the key. But it has been doing this for the last three days. Did I miss something?
It is possible that the fuel is draining out of the carb overnight? That way the engine wont start until the carb is refilled by the fuel pump. Before you start it tommorrow, for the first time, look into the carb and pump the throttle linkage by hand. If you see fuel squirt in then my guess is wrong. However if you dont see fuel squirt in then this could be the prob.
Just a thought.
Thanks for the input Sparky. I have been tossing that thought around all day. Waiting till the AM to give it a try. I just bought that 600cfm 4 barrel Edelbrock about 5 months ago and had it on the engine before rebuilding it last week. But I keep coming back to it myself. Thanks again...
Well I checked the carb this morning before trying to start my truck. It had fuel spraying out from the first push of the throttle cable, so the fuel leaking out isnt the problem. It started a little easier this morning, but still had to crank it for a couple of minutes. I am contemplating a hotter (newer) coil for this situation. Any thoughts. I am open to inout.... I have used Mallory and Accel coils in the past. Anything better out there?
Just for luck... Try a larger plug gap to see if it responds better on the cold start....and yes I`de put in a fresh coil..

I put a MSD Blaster 2 on today and will give it a try first thing in the AM, It seems to be starting easier as I get a few miles on the rebuild. I followed that tech article from this site and used the flat top pistons and mild cam, Had the block taken .030 and took .010 off the heads. I think it may just be a little tight during the break in. Thank you all for your input. This is my first Ford redo since the late 60's, Feel like a kid again. But glad my pockets are alot deeper now. LOL...
The new coil seems to have done the trick. Thank all of you who took the time to reply to my problem. :-) Now All I have to do is wait for all the ice to melt in my driveway so I can continue on with the restoration.
I have a 77 F150 with the 400, i found that hard starting was in the choke settings, those edelbrocks come out of the box set pretty lean, have you tried the idle mixture?? are the plugs white?? im new to this site so if any one wants to help me with my F150 eme seanwb@tisd.net
