I am in the process of building a 302 for my 89 F150 and have decided to use Procomps 190 aluminum cylinder heads with 60cc combustion chamber. My question is what is the largest intake and exhaust valve you can safely use with a stock piston? The motor came out of a '88 mustang GT so I do know it's a roller engine. I am using a .498 lift intake/exhaust Ford Racing roller cam. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!
Are you using the E cam , The 1.94 intake valves should be good & so should the 2.02 valves with that cam , Not 100 % sure on the 88 HO but on the latter HOs no problem . I run the E 303 with 1.94 valves & 1.72 RR on a 92 HO with no problems ...Lew
Even if the HO motor has pistons with valve eyebrows they were designed for heads with smaller valves so they may not provide any extra clearance with these heads. Cam duration impacts clearance as much as lift so there really is no way to know without checking. The clay test is simple but requires a little work to setup, but it's far better to know you have clearance than to simply take somebody's word for it, it could get real expensive if there isn't clearance.
Is this a go through trails kind of truck or a hold her to the floor and get to the other side fastest kind of truck? Just seems like a hold her to the floor and let it scream kind of cam, just wondering since you are using a 5.0.
Hey Doug , i think your a little off base . Im not an expert engine builder , but i have built several mustangs & now my truck . I like the E 303 cam with 1.72 ratio rockers , works great for me in my light truck , have good RPM & still pulls good on the low end , may not be good for a heavy truck , but a light truck or mustang , different story . My truck pulls harder than a lot of mustangs do , if i took you for i ride in it you would know what im talking about. Im not saying there the best cam , there are so many now days , but they do have there place in certain cars & trucks , so to say they are a POS is ignorant , IMO....Lew
