I noticed a little puddle of oil under my truck ther other day and checked the oil level and it was about 2 quarts low. I topped it off and drove for a few days and just checked it and it is low again. It looks to me like it is coming from behind the hot side of the turbo and running down the back of the motor. There is also pools of oil in the engine valley...does anyone know what might be leaking? Its an 01 250. Thank you
Exhaust back pressure valve (ebpv) actuator rod is a common leak in cthat location. Its located on ctge pedestal and guzzle or clay can get u everything you need
Check the valley for any standing oil or a sheen along the valve covers. If the valley and the front end of it are dry then you most likely have a leak in the rear (i.e. exhaust backpressure valve or turbo pedestal).
If you have evidence of oil in the valley then you probably have a leak up forward. If you're sure it's oil, then you most likely have something leaking with the high pressure oil pump (HPOP). There are several plugs and two discharge ports (that tubes connect to) that could be leaking. Also, you could have a leak at the gasket where the HPOP mounts to the engine. Or possibly the ICP sensor. Or possible the IPR to HPOP o-ring.
If you don't know if you are leaking fuel instead, make sure you check all of the fitting on your fuel/water separator bowl. The fittings used for those connections wear out over time and can leak.
It's hard to tell exactly where your leak is coming from since the valley has a drain hole in the back right that will drain down the block and coat the right side of the engine and transmission housing. If you can, I would soak up as much oil as possible, spray some Simple Green down in the valley and on the HPOP housing, rinse with some garden hose water (NOT under pressure) to try to clean up the area a little. After that, run the engine and see if you notice where it's coming from.
I ended up with a couple of leaks, one of the being the non-serviceable plug (the plug that's right below and near the two HPOP discharge ports on the driver's side of the engine.
The rubber o-rings are known to give out after time, it's just hard to determine what's leaking the way they pack everything in the valley.
When you do find your leak, there are plenty of write-ups to help you do it yourself (if you don't want to give your money to a shop), and Bob (Replacement O-rings for Ford Diesel Engines) has all the Viton o-rings you could ever need!
Thanks for all the info. It looks like the ebpv i can see under the turbo and there is oil and garbage all over that area and most of the oil is in the back of the valley. I replaced my pedastal orings in the summer because they were leaking and it was fine after but would the ebpv leak as much oil as i am losing?

That's what I would do. As a matter of fact that's what I did do. No more leaky EBPV actuator.
I just ordered mine w/ the NON-EBPV Outlet Flange. Can't wait til it gets a little warmer outside so I can put them in. Not having a garage really sucks.
Have you ever seen this. It cost the price of the plug.
I saw a couple write-ups about it. But I paid about $150 total for both pieces so I figured might as well. I know its $150 I could have done more mods with but I never have to worry about it again. It probably would've been fine but its just one of those peace-of-mind things.
