4x4 not engaging ???
4x4 not engaging ???
Happy Holidays to all...
I'm having troubles with my 4 wheel drive not engaging. It worked fine last week in the 22 inches of snow we got,and I tried it yesterday and it wont even engage .??.
Does it work off of a vacuum system or something? Maybe a vacuum came undone,is that possible?
I drive a 2006 stx 4x4....
Any advice would help,it is still under warranty, but I thought maybe its a quick fix???
Thanks in advance..

Does your 4x4 light come on? If it doesnt, then your problem is probably with your switch motor on the transfer case. If it is coming on and no 4x4 then read this:

Same prob...
xjcamaro89,
I am from MI originally but stationed in FL for military...haven't had to use it in awhile but tried to engage 4x4 since have come up for holidays and now it won't work. It's probably been a year since used it. The 4x4 lights illuminate when I start it and it goes through it's checks but when I try to engage it with the switch the light does not come on nor does it feel like it engages physically. Is that a switch issue or relays or the engaging motor you mentioned??
Thanks!

It could possibly be any of those three you mentioned, but what i would do is find the windshield wiper motor looking thing on the transfer case and give it a couple taps with a rubber mallet. and then try it. What happens is that after prolonged non-use of engaging, it sticks, and tapping it alot of time frees it up. Try that before doing anything else. I dont think your problem is a vacuum problem cause if it was you would get the light and no 4x4, but you are not getting any lights and no 4x4.
ok thanks...Ill try that but also had a question about the light...does the dash light illuminate after the 4x4 engages at the wheels to trip a physical switch or does the light come on with electronic signal initiated by the switch whether the 4x4 is actually engaged or not??
The light is set off by the switch motor on the transfer case (from what ive heard) so if your not getting the light, that is the first place to look.
If you were getting the light and no 4x4, your tansfer case would be going into 4x4 but the vacuum system that runs the hubs at the wheel would not be working right.
So i would definately check the switch motor on the transfer case. Most of the time that is the problem, a very small amount of cases end up being the switch on the dash or a relay or something like that.
