Thanks for the info because I was wondering the same about our 1989 429 that I have never changed but plan to do as soon as our new Fumoto oil drain valve arrives.
WM brand 10W-30 synthetic has worked good in the MH 454 but currently have 5W-40 Rotella syn in it. I was concerned about the Ford since I know they say thinner is better.
Since I would like to change it again in about 1000 miles using another round of Sea Foam in the crank case the last 50-100 miles before the drain I could use regular dino I guess but the gap between syn and dino seems to be closing price wise.
The 454 had 93K miles when we took it to synthetic and had not increase in leaks and at 100K still does 3K miles lowering the oil level by 1/2 a quart.
Unless that vehicle has been ran on synthetic it's whole life or if it is right on the oil cap there is no need to run it and it is not recommended to run.Stick with good ole 10w30 and she'll be fine.
If an oil seal is leaking, putting a thicker oil isn't the answer. Fix the seal and run whatever oil you want. Synthetic is proven to last longer. Do whatever you want.
10-30 high mileage isn't any thicker it just lubricates old dry seals ...I used the synthetic in a older motor that made it leak more then switched to the castrol GTX & after a 2000 mi the leaks all but quit .....
I use Mobil 1 Synthetic from Walmart, I got my truck with 176k when I stated using the SYN oil. It now has 180k and I really think the little oil leak it had has stopped. I just like the longevity from SYN and the fact that in my Harley Davidson, I ONLY use Royal Purple and REALLY does absorb more of the heat. If it works that good in an air cooled engine, I trust it in my Truck. BTW 10/30.

i agree 100% and even if it wasnt leaking the only reason running synthetic would cause it to start is because it cleaned the gummed up garbage oil u ran in it before
dont be lazy fix ur leaks and run good oil that will make it ur engine last longer
I think you guys are missing the point . I run synthetic in my 04 & my 95 , but in my older work truck i use the reg 10-30 & it just works better , so its just what works best for each truck.... Lew
