Ever since I did the up pipes and under valve cover retorque and replaced glow plugs, I have been hearing a ticking noise that makes me think of an exhaust leak. Well, I just got through, again, going thru the steps. I can find no soot deposits and at start up I put my hand around all exhaust connections and cannot feel any escaping air. It sounds like it's coming from the drivers side.
My question is...is there anything under the valve cover that I could have messed up that would make this crazy ticking sound?
It could be the #8 injector, they are known for the ticking...and its on the drivers side.
Or in my case....what I thought was the injector ticking turned out to be the torque converter....It started as a tick then went to a knocking sound after a few months. I replaced the tc, and now I can hear the faint sound of #8 ticking again......I guess I can live with that.
I dont think an exhaust leak on a diesel will tick like on a gassed because of the lack of back pressure...I could be wrong....

I hope its not the tc...good luck!
Thanks for the reply. I did the HPX and FRX at the same time and I did not hear it before that. It seems that I only hear it under a load and when I get into it I don't hear it. I'm baffled, but then that's nothing new.
OK, I took all the clamps loose and wiggled and pulled and lined everything up and tightened it all back up again and it seems to be quieter. I listened to that thing run like crap for so long that it just may be I don't know what it's supposed to sound like any more.
I do need to replace a clamp on one boot but I don't think that would make the noise I was hearing.
It's probably just the injector ticking away.
An easy way to narrow it down is to get the engine warmed up, then shut it off.
Then pop the hood and unplug the driver's side injector harness.
Start the engine.
It will run but only on 4 cylinders.
If the tick is gone, it's simply the famous #8 tapping away.
Try unplugging the harness at the vave cover on that side, then partially plug it back in, start the engine, and rock the plug slightly to break contact in the front, then back. That way you can pin the noise down to the front two or rear two cylinders.
I made a tool to shut off each injector on one side out of an old UVCH and valve cover gasket. It is a handy tool for this type of troubleshooting. It took a few hours and about $35.00 in parts.
