Axel codes

Hi all, I have both a 65 and a 66 F100. Axel codes on data plate are 08 and A9. Can someone decode those for me? Also, I know the 65 is a 9" and the 66 is a Dana. Which is the best to put in a 65 SNB with a mild 390? Thanks for your help.

Can't help with the decode, but the 9" is plenty stout and parts are plentiful. They are the choice of NASCAR and numerous other racing series. Nothing wrong with the DANA either, but from a parts availabilty and probably cost standpoint, I'd go with the 9".

08 = Ford 9" Rear Axle / 3.50-1 / non Limited Slip / 3300 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.

A9 = Spicer-Dana 60.3 Rear Axle / 3.54-1 / LIMITED SLIP / 3300 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.

1961/67 F100: When Limited Slip was ordered, Ford usually installed the Spicer-Dana 44 because the 9" was not available in F100's with Limited Slip (until 1968).

In addition, the Spicer-Dana 60.2 (1961/65) or Dana 60.3 (1966/72) with or without Limited Slip were also available as options.

Thanks Bill. What is the difference between the Dana 60.3 and the 44? The 9" is also a limited slip, so it must be a replacement rear end.

Prostock, all my other trucks had 9" so I've not had any experiance with Danas. Anybody else have any thoughts? The Dana is in a parts truck I have and the 9" is in a driver.
