Help with trailer plug....

'02 F350.....I have no brake lights on trailer, nor blinkers, but running lights are fine. All lights on truck work. My brake controller is not working (no trailer brakes) and the signal strength light is very dimly lit green (sometimes).

I checked all fuses in fuse panel...all wires are coonected and look ok on trailer plug. Any ideas on where to look next.

I'm kind of clueless on this stuff thx

Because brake/turn signal lights and brakes require more amps than running lights, I'd guess you've got a trailer ground problem. Check the ground wire where it comes from the connector all the way to the trailer frame, looking for broken strands and a dirty/rusted ring connector or frame.

first make sure there is a ground wire connected.

many times, people rely on the hitch to ground the trailer... bad idea.

Next, are both filiments in the bulbs good?

You said you checked the fuses in the fuse panel. Did you check the underhood fuse panel. Trailer lights are fused by themselves in the underhood panel.

Pop the actual connector out of the housing and inspect the terminals for corrosion. Do this for both the truck and trailer.

Have you checked your trailer plug with a test light to make sure it has power? Is it a 4 flat or a 7 round trailer plug? I'd assume it's a 7 round because you are talking about a brake controller as well. If you are getting power there then the problem is on the trailer. Like others have said make sure you check the under the hood fuses near the mster cylinder. Brake lights and turn signals run on the same fuses (one for the left side and one for the ride side). The parking lights are on a seperate fuse as well. It could be as simple as corrosion in the plug. Make sure you clean the terminals out really well with a good contact cleaner. Corrosion could also make your brake controller act up as well because it won't be getting a full contact.

Jay -

Did you get your problem taken care of, or did we waste our time with suggestions?

You did not waste your time as I was having the same problem. Watching the thread solved my problem with corrosion deep in the female plugs, thanks all even though I did not start the thread!

Glad to hear you got 'er fixed; corrosion that bad is a good reason to keep the TV and trailer connectors clean, dry and covered when not in use.

You got that right, the surface of the plug, looking at you looked good, but I had to kinda dig in there and pulled out a lot of corrosion. I then flushed it out with spray contact cleaner. it took quite some time to go thru all the slots and dig it out. I then shuved dielectric grease in there, liberally. I plugged it into the truck and it worked like a charm. Thanks again!
