GPCM

Well I just received my glow plug control module from Clay just in time for the holidays. I sure need my bus for the trip home. Is there anything special about the install besides 2 10mm nuts and 2 plugs? Still trying to figure out why ford was going to charge me 440 bucks for the part and install. The part was 250 so the labor was going to be 190. That is insane for something that looks like 10 minutes if work. I sure hope that fixes the problem. - do not want to drive the wifes buick over the holidays.

Oh yeah, I posted not too long ago about the 2900 quote from ford to fic a lot of things such as the ball joints, brakes, fuel filter and a leaking intercooler boot. They are a bunch of crooks

when replacing the GPCM, do you have to remove the cold air side to get to the 10mm nut on the back side of the module? It seems you do because the lack of room

took the tube off, replaced the module. hooked the batteries back up and it fire right up. The SEL went off and I am good to go. Thanks to Clay for the $149 part that FORD wanted $250 for and labor would have totaled $440. Thats a savings of $291. I am waiting on my $21 fuel filter to come in that FORD wanted 82.95 to replace. Thanks for the info and Happy Holidays. Now I can drive my big ol girl to my parents because with all that stuff my wife bought, I am gonna need it!!

Cool im back

Well I have put 100 miles on her since the gpcm swap and guess what?? Another SEL!!! P0670 from what I have researched it appears the same problem with the gpcm. Would it be the plug or a short in the wiring and if so how do I go about checking it out? Just when I thought I was out of the woods

excursions and some california emissions 7.3's have a control module with individual output wires to each glow plug. Its supposed to help reduce the cold start emissions apparently, but its a whole boatload more complex than a GPR. Buy the stancor relay on guzzl'es mods page....well worth the cash and an easy install. For the GPCM ther is no cheap easy relacement

You need to check your wiring.

QB6 CHECK FOR DTC P0670
DTC P0670 is set when the PCM detects a malfunction in the GPCM control circuit.
Possible causes:
Open control line
Control line shorted to ground or power
Faulty PCM circuit
Faulty GPCM circuit
Perform KOEO on-demand self test and retrieve/clear continuous DTCs.

Measure resistant between PCM test pin 101 and GPCM connector pin 8 at GREEN connector, circuit 1086 (PK/OG).
Is the resistance greater than 5 ohms? (Typical resistance value is less than 1 ohm.)
Yes
REPAIR open in circuit 1086 (PK/OG). RESTORE system. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.
No GO to QB8 .

QB8 CHECK FOR SHORT TO POWER IN CONTROL CIRCUIT
Key ON/Engine OFF.
Measure voltage between PCM test pin 101 and ground, circuit 1086 (PK/OG).
Is the voltage greater than 5 volts? (Typical voltage should be 0 volts.)
Yes
REPAIR short to power in circuit 1086 (PK/OG). RESTORE system. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.
No GO to QB9 .

QB9 CHECK FOR SHORT TO GROUND IN CONTROL CIRCUIT
Key OFF.
Connect PCM to Breakout Box; leave PCM disconnected.
Key ON/Engine OFF.
Measure resistance between PCM test pin 101 and ground.
Is the resistance less than 1 ohm? (Typical voltage should be 12 volts.)
Yes
REPAIR short to ground in circuit 1086 (PK/OG). RESTORE system. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.
No GO to QB10 .

QB10 CHECK MODULE FUNCTION
Connect both GPCM and PCM correctly.
Disconnect wiring at engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor (this will maximize the glow plug on-time).
Connect a voltmeter across battery terminals.
Note: Take voltage measurements within first minute of turning key to ON position.

Key ON/Engine OFF.
Check voltmeter. If battery voltage drops below 11 volts, recharge and test battery before continuing this test.
Measure voltage between PCM test pin 101 and ground while ignition key is in ON position.
Wait until glow plug system times out, (glow plug on-time will be two minutes after key on).
Measure voltage at PCM test pin 101 after glow plug system times out.
Is the voltage low (less than 1 V) when glow plugs are on and high (greater than 10 V) when glow plugs are off?
Yes INSTALL a new GPCM. RESTORE system. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.
No INSTALL a new PCM. RESTORE system. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.

Been there, done that. The pigtails ended up being my problem. Kind of a PITA to replace but the 'repair kit' from Int'l makes it as easy and permanent as possible. The good news is the repair kit is only 1/2 as much as you paid for GPCM. And now ya might have an extra GPCM... (like me )

Thanks again Chris for helping me back then! One more reason

I was looking for a pic of the failed pigtails - none in my photobucket... I'll dig one out tomorow and take one.

Basically, the plastic around the big pins was melted and pins no longer made good contact. It was easy to see the problem when I looked at it. REALLY made me want a simple freakin' GPR. LOL!
