I'm looking to get into a wide body 16-20'+ enclosed trailer. As usual EVERYONE has the best quality. Please post your suggestions and recommendations to sift through all the hype.
My buddy has a 24' Pace enclosed car trailer. I think its 24'. He loves it. We tow his race car all over New Englanf with it. Other than regular maintenance it's been great.
My 20' Haulmark is 4 years old with 18,000 miles. No problems at all. I would recommend a 10K GVW over a 7K GVW. Trailers are like pole barns, they are never quite big enough after you get moved in.
From what I've seen at construction sites, Haulmarks are one of the most durable, followed by Wells Cargo, and Pace. All three of those tend to have actual plywood floors and walls instead of the chipboard everyone else seems to use.
You know, I was thinking about that ramp story. Here is what I think the deal is.
The OEM had tested their ramps using a vehicle with a long wheel base to determine the load rating. The person's gate that bent drove up a heavy short wheel base vehicle that got it's rear wheels off the ground and the front wheels where the bend occurred. With a heavy V-8 this would put a lot of weight near the hinge, where it bent.
imho, The problem is the OEM did not properly weight rate the door by piling dead iron weight on the ramp and adding a 10-20% fudge factor to account for bouncing. They probably just determined it by driving one or two vehicles up and down the ramps.
I have driven tractors up the ramp door in my trailer. As long as the jacks in the rear are down it is a non issue. If your concerned about that just get some jacks in the rear corners
You are right about the ramp door being the weakest feature. I keep a pair of 2"x10"x10' planks to lay over the ramp when loading the real heavy stuff.
i really like my haulmark. i went with the more traditional van-style doors rather than the ramp door. its easier for a forklift to load a pallet of something in that way. what few times i could use a ramp, i just have a pair of 2x6's handy. my 2nd choice would be a pace.
i just ordered a 8.5' X 20' United enclosed trailer. I know some people that have them and say they are good trailers. My final choice was either a Haulmark or United. Haulmark is really proud of there name but they also have good quality. Good Luck
