84 bronco dies after engine warms up

Hello, first post in this forum.

i have an 84 Bronco-staright 6, manual trans.

It runs great until the motor warms up and than dies, no sputter or anything. just like the key was turned off. when it dies the tach goes straight to 0. let it set for a while and it will crank right up and run again. but maybe for only a few minutes, dependt on how long it sat and cooled. i replaced the fuel filter, no help. thinking of replacing the fuel pump, but really think it is something electrical. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,

I just noticed only the slightest forward movement(to the front of the vehicle) of the 6 wire connector at the bottom of the distributor, has the same effect and kills the motor instantly. looked at the connector everything looks fine. it looks that this connector has been replaced before, because all the wires are spliced about 6 inches away from it. What do these wires do? does not sound normal to me. any help, greatly appreciated. I have had this Bronc for about 10 years, it has been very reliable. Please help.

That's the connector for your ingnition control module. Unfortunately they can be a pain in the butt .... loose terminals and such. As far as warming up before it dies I don't think that's going to be that connector. I'm assuming you have a feedback carb as well so it could well be a problem there maybe with the throttle positioner.

Might want to try and move this to the "Big Six" section.

Satkins, Thanks for the info.

i have been playing with it all day, and convinced this is my problem. I let it cool completely off, cranked it and i can push this connector any way and hard as i want, with no effect. So my question is how do i fix or replace it? do i have to replace the distributor? I appreciate any help. do not understand it, but sure it is my problem.

Thanks,
It could be either your ignition module or coil.

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:

http://performancedistributors.com/forddistributors.htm

Also, there is now an excellent installation article on the D.U.I. Distributor on the Ford-Trucks.com site at:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/0/358/article/DUI_Ignition_Installation_In_A_Ford_351W_V8.html

Ignition Lesson of the Month: Hystereses, the difference between the timing as the rpm and vacuum increases to the timing as rpm and vacuum decrease, needs to be kept to a minimum. A precise advance curve accomplishes this.

To do the module you'll have to pull the distributor, module screws, then do some wiggling to get the module disengaged. The connector is a matter of finding a replacement and cutting and soldering wires.
Let's make sure of something after reading the "spliced" part of your post. You have a flat connector mounted to a flat piece on the side of the distributor correct? or is it something else?

Yes and yes, i think, pretty sure.

i cleaned the area and it appears the module is screced to the distributor, on the front side/ base. it is white in color and has a female connector for the 6 wire male connector to go into. does this sound right? it appears it is all done form the outside of the distributor. while distributor is off anything else i should replace or check?

Thanks again,

I was just making sure it was TFI ignition.

Not sure what else to check without seeing it. Sorry but just so much you can do from a keyboard.

I just converted mine to Duraspark II ignition so I have some extra TFI parts laying around.

Good Luck,
Steve

You might be able to remove the module with the dist in place. After you remove the 2 screws, wiggle it down. The module can be tested at the auto parts store. It might be failing due to heat.

Thanks,

My '88 was stalling a lot, turned out to be the ignition switch, it's an $11 part, may be worth looking into
