Shock Distribution

I am curious to know what the three wires on the bottom of my distributor do. There is a connector on one end and on the distributor end their is just spade terminals to push into the connector. The wires colors don't match so I am not sure how to match the correct wires together if that makes sense. The motor is a 460 out of a 70 or 71 lincoln and the truck is a 79 ford f150.

What color are the wires you are dealing with?
Usually the wires are black, orange and purple. They connect to the corresponding colors at the module. Black is ground and purple and orange are the pickup coil leads.

What would happen if the orange and purple leads were mixed up? Could that possibly cause the engine to lose a substantial ammount of power?

I don't know what, if anything would happen.
Here is a wiring diagram of the Duraspark ignition.
