howdy yall, im completely new to diesel motors. im wondering what type items fail on theses 7.3 motors. i got a 93 f250 with 256k on it. any advice yall can give would be great. thank ya
i do believe i am experiencing the return line issue right now, and i have an oil leak that i have not had time to track down just yet. but for 800 bucks i think i got a good deal on the truck
Not much really "fails" on these. Glow plug issues and air in fuel lines seem to be the most common problems.
On the glow plug side, the relays fail, and the plugs themselves fail. Always replace the glow plugs with Motorcraft/Beru and all 8 at once if you can.
On the air in the lines, the return line fittings on the injectors, as well as o-rings tend to fail. It will cause hard starting after stalling in most cases. Sometimes the fuel filter housings have leaks too. Or, the lines themselves will just get old (the ones inbetween injectors).
Head gaskets fail a lot if you run a turbo and too much boost...
Careful recommending GPs. Everybody here seem to like the BERUs, but they can burn out. Fishin76 is about to make video of some othe GPs to prove how they act. I prefer Autolite 1109s because you can leave them on for extended time (over 3 minutes) without a failure. They may not work with thew OEM controller, but a push button works great with no failure rate, and a lot cheaper.

Your the first one I've ever heard recomend an Autolite! Ever. lol
I did just do a test between Autolites and Beru literally 10 minutes ago... and the seemed about the same to me. Niether impressed, but most people recomend the Beru because they supposedly don't distort like Autos (although niether did in my tests, I did film it).
I would be curious about how hot the 1109's get compared to the beru's.
The tests that everybodys doing while it tells a little we dont have the temps or how they act at temps combined with compression and diesel fuel. We need paul harvey for the rest of the story.
As far as autolite is concerned they knew the put out a bad product that caused a lot of problems for a lot of people for several years and didn't recall or even quit marketing them, so all I can do is decide what company gets my money.
These get REAL hot. I started mine today on 4 good GPs at 28 degrees. Took some extra cranking because I had the return lines disconnected for a day. I am putting these wellmans in. 4 to go

You're right about the recommendation. You have to realize that the books don't call out the Autolite 1109 for your IH engines. Everybody forgets to specify what type they are using. There is no way I would recommend any other autolite GP. ONLY 1109's. ALWAYS preheat your GPsa before you install them to catch any infant failures. Takes about 5 minutes, can save a lot.
