explorer would not start the other day, the starter would try but couldnt turn it over, sounded like it was binding. so today i removed the starter and had it tested , passed electrical test but had play in the shaft of the starter gear. so i installed a new starter and it started up fine had a noise i narrowed that down to a pulley bearing going out. the engine started fine over the course of the day a few times then left me stranded with the same symptoms as befor, will try to turn and either turn it a small portion or try and not turn it at alll, acts like its bound or something, any ideas? motor is not locked up
If you turn on the interior lights when you try to start the engine, do the lights get severely dim when the starter seems to bind, or do they remain bright or get brighter? If they dim significantly, then it does sound like something is causing the starter to bind. If they get bright, then it sounds like the starter relay or ignition switch is releasing the starter.
I assume when you say that it sounds like the starter is binding you hear a single metallic "clunk" when you turn the key to start and then nothing. If you hear a single clunk followed shortly by a rapid series of clicks, that would suggest a loose/dirty connection or a weak battery.
thanks for the response, the lights do dim pretty signifficantly when trying to start, but i wouldnt say there is a clicking sound , its more of a groaning sound , like the starter motor straining
You might try putting a portable jump start pack on the battery next time this occurs and see if that changes the outcome. Or take your battery to the parts store and have them perform a load test on it. With your vehicle being a 2000 it's probably due for battery #2 anyway. Sounds are very difficult to describe in words, your groaning may be my rapid click. Have you heard a starter solenoid that engages and disengages due to low voltage so that you could say it's definitely not that, or might we be talking the same thing here?
tried starting it with jumper from a good battery, and running truck , no change. selenoid is deffinately engaging just acts like it is tight to turn the engine, starter does turn engine very slowly when you turn the ignition but acts like it just runs out of power after turning it part of a rotatation so its turning it more everytime you try, not stuck in one spot
You might just have a weak starter. The tests performed by the parts store likely just check for current draw and operation in a no-load state. Once you put a load on the starter, maybe it just can't function up to par. Since you know the starter stays engaged and you know it's not a connection/current issue to the starter, as well as knowing the engine isn't seized or flooding, the starter is about all that's left.
well i wasnt to far off track , the starter was getting alot of mechanical resistance but it turns out it came from a locked up ac compressor pulley/clutch, wich explains why it would turn the engine over some because it was slipping the belt id of rather it been another bad starter but its not. looks like anther long day tomorrow.
