replacing 4r553 with
i have a 96 4x4 explorer with the 4.o and auto trans. i have a friend who has a wrecked 96 with the 5.0 and auto trans awd. the trans in mine is bad bought the drivetrain of his is still good. would the trans from the v8 mate to the v6. or am i looking at swapping engines too.

I have a better idea, rebuild your 4R55e. It is more reliable and in the long run more cost effective. If you work slowly and take your time, you can rebuild your own fairly inexpensively. I have mine rebuilt by a shop cause I don't have the tools or the time. But swapping one used trans for another usually ends in disappointment or new problems.
I'm not sure what the V8s used, but I suspect at that time it was an AOD variant.
