just got this truck a few weeks ago but i did the work on it when needed for a few years now.about 2 years ago i put a new controller and MC plugs. yesterday morning the wts light flashed on for half a second and glowplugs never came on. i had to jump power with cables. the rest of the day they worked good. last night they started coming on while driving repeatedly. i had to unhook them as to not burn the plugs. does this sound like a bad controller. if it is, i am going to put a button on the dash. also this truck does not get very hot at all. i am in houston and i can drive it at 70 mph for about 30 minutes before it iven get to the O in normal where it stays until i slow down, at which point it will get lower than the N. the heater feels like it's just warm. i think it has no thermostat. is there a way without removing the upper hose from the motor to find out if it is missing.
well it probably due for a new thermostat anyway.so o would just swap in a new motorcraft thermostat.and mine runes between the n and the o but it will cook you with the heat on low
I think you can see the water moving in the radiator with the cap off once the stat opens so if no stat the water should be moving straight away when cold. Other wise top hose off is fairly easy and you can see the stat from the top with a torch.
I've bought a couple of 180*s for the 6.9 cause with the 195 on the 6.9 I found it running abit hot for my comfort (especially in the mountains) but a while ago the 195 on the 7.3 went out so I just replaced it with a 180 I originally bought for the 6.9

Was it really hot or just the guage indication............
Diesel engine coolant temperature at the top of the radiator where hose attaches after high rpm or under load condition for 20 minutes should be (195-237*F) 91-114*C nice time to have a temperature reading point and shoot tool.

Thanks...I just finished reading the 28 page thread on tuning with glowplug readings, and I thought Crossbones 2 stated the upper hose should read ~195*F but was not sure. {Should anyone else wish to read this long, somewhat incomplete thread, it started 3-21-09} Lots of good info.
Now to buy and change my thermostat.
