Check engine lite does'nt work on 86' 2.3 Ranger
1986 Ranger 2.3 EFI 5-speed 130,000 miles
I am at a Loss!
My truck has been at a mechanics garage for a week now, and he tells me he doesn't know what the problem could be. A few weeks ago it started acting up. (My Prior Posts- Ignition problems... by Bozo4ford) After about twenty minutes,it would start to shimmy, hestiate and lose power, where I had to fight with the clutch to keep it going and under power. A few months ago, I replaced Water pump, thermastat and housing, Exhaust manifold,Inline Fuel filter, and fuel sensor, Spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, New Ford Timing Belt and then my Ignition Control module. The igntion control module was a WELLS from the local parts place.
I contacted two Ford dealerships, and they both told me that the only way the Diagnostic test will read the Codecs, (codes) would be to bring it in while duplicating the problem...and for three days it did not do the problem until last friday. I was driving down the road and POOF! It conked out and just stopped running. It would turn over, but sounded like a fuel pump problem.
Pushed it over to the garage (right across the street) the mechanic automatically told me to go to FORD and buy a Motorcraft Igition Control (TFI) ($107) which I did. we put it in,and the same problem. He unplugged the top two wires from my Alternator, and it magically worked better. (?) He then told me I needed a new Alternator, which I went back to Ford to buy one. ($220) he stuck it in and the same problem. he then asked when the last time I saw the CHECK ENGINE light. I couldn't remember. he needed it to read the codes with his scanner. So now it has an electric short? I give up.... I asked him if it could be the pick up coil in the Distributor ? No.
Does anyone have any suggestions? (besides junking this car..that is) Thanks, bozo4ford
P.S. he accidently broke the inspection plug on the from of the Timing belt cover....I this something I should replace? Ford doesn't stock this part..maybe a wreck yard. I'm sure he knows his buisness, aqnd seems to be a nice guy,but I have to get back to work, and I do not have another car to use while he tinkers with this in his down time. So far I have $330.00 into this, not including all the other stuff I bought prior,(about 500.00,It would have been cheaper in the long run to put a rebuilt engine in it.)
From what I have learned, and what JIM4x2SD told me,my 1986 Ranger does NOT have a "CHECK ENGINE" light and that it didn't come out until the later models.
Also,The mechanic was stumped, and told me to take it someplace else, preferably an electrical shop, and that he thought there was an electrical short somewhere,in the main wiring harnessbecause after we installed the the new Motorcraft TFI (Ignition Control module)((( My most recent experience is to ALWAY'S USE FORD MOTORCRAFT IGNITION & ELECTRONIC replacement parts)))))and a brand new Ford Alternator, my truck will only run with the two (on the top) Alternator Regulators unplugged! (Run it by bypassing) very weird.
I called another mechanic, and he said he thought it most likely to be the Pick-up coil (stator assembly). He said when one replaces the TFI,you alway's replace the pick up coil too.
I know some of the replies I have recieved was to see if the Inline fuel pump overheats,he said he checked all that,or to see if the 4 prong-oval shaped connector on the top of the fuel tank was bad,or the Pump fuel relay....I appreciate your time in trying to help me solve my problem,(s) but I still have to remind myself, that this 1986 truck is only worth $400.00 or $500.00 dollars, and so far,I have spent about that this year alone. Thanks All!
Keeping you posted... Thanks again, bozo4ford
Thank you for all your posts in reply to my problems...... I know many people have sent me their advice, and I probably need every single fix they suggested. It was the pickup coil.
The mechanic had called to tell me that I had an electrical short in the wiring harness, and for me to take it to an Auto electric shop, and that guy said he couldn't look at it,but he had another Auto repair shop that could. I called them and told him the problem, and he told me that everytime you replace your TFI Module, you should replace the pick up coil too. (stater assembly) and that was the most likely problem. So far. Both of you were right!
F.Y.I. >>>>> And for anyone else with an 1986 Ford Ranger, there is NO "Check Engine" light onboard.
And soon,I may still have to replace my fuel pump relay,or the inline fuel pump and filter. Thanks!
