Hello, I am new here. How hard would it be for me to add a video system to my 2001 XLT? I have rear air so I have that rear air control right in the way of where you would put a TV. I went to Circuit City and they said Audiovox has a console replacement that ties everything together and leaves enough room for the TV. Anyone have one? Anyone have a better idea? Can you post pics if you have installed a system like this or any TV system for that matter?
I know very little about the console mounted TV's. Depending on your budget, you could also look into Dash mounted TV's. I just put a Clarion CD/DVD/MP3 changer in my truck, with Clarions head unit. It comes with a fully motorized stealt 7" Monitor, and with the use of a standard filler piece, fits nicely where the existing head unit was.
I dont have any pictures of it up yet, but if you go to:
www.clarion.com you can get an idea of what im talking about.
Just my .02 (dont mean to offend anymone) Ive heard more bad stories abount circuit city than ive heard good. I would recommend looking at local Stereo Suppliers or even the Internet Wholesalers b4 you go there. They may offer some good deals, but the installation is far from quality.
I put one in and went the cheap route. Wally world had a sale on a AC/DC 9" TV/VCR combo TV for $130. I got it and then built a little stand that fits between the console and the back seat. A few tie down straps and it works pretty well. Definitely kept the kidos quiet on the long trips. Total cost <$200 and I can bring it inside when not in use and us it somewhere in the house. Not as sharp lookin' as the LCD but you can see it from the third seat and at a pretty good angle.
Well that is what I have right now. I don't keep it in the Expy, but when we go on trips, I have a 9" TV/VCR combo that I bring along. It's the one that has the adapter to plug into the cig lighter, so it works well. The problem with it, is that it has to sit on top of the console and to be honest, it's not comfortable to drive with your arm on a hot TV! LOL! I really want to get a LCD installed permanently in the Expy. If anyone has any other ideas, or some pics, I'd love to see them.
P.S. Why is the website one person gave me blocked (####) out?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Aug-02 AT 08:46 AM (EST)]performance products.com.....That was what I was trying to post. I don't know why it did not come up. I saw the unit in their Ford Performance Products print catalog.
WeatherNLU I built a little box stand that sits behind the front sole and infront of the back seat. I than strapped it in place. The box has a place for a N64 below the TV/VCR and I rigged a DVD player under the passenger dash so that My wife ccould control the movies start/stops for the kiddos. Works well. But it is definitely more bulky than LCD.... BTW I saw that Fry's has a sale on a DVD/LCD combo for $300.
I added 2 head rest screens, tv tuner and dvd player, and FM modulator to my 97 Expedition. Items came from www.partsexpress.com , works great. Their tech support was very helpful in specing some parts based on what i wanted. Total was under $1000 for all. Recently put a similar system in my sons truck and went with a play station that plays dvds. this was cheaper and plays games. Also works great. good luck

How did you do the head rests? My 2001 does not have head rests, the seat is all in one, maybe the '97 was different. How was all the wiring to do yourself?
I got a quote from a local car audio speciality store. They are offering me the new console for the roof, the AudioVox 6.7" drop down screen, the DVD player mounted underneath the seats, the FM modulator, the TV tuner and the installation of all this for $1527 with tax. Does this sound about right, or does it sound a bit high?
raybo3 I power the game unit with a power inverter, plugs into the cig lighter 12VDC and converts to 120VAC. I got a 150W one (thats seemed to be enough from my calulations for a DVD player and a game unit) from Fry's. Radio Shaft also sells them. Be sure and figure what your power requirements will be. The wattage required by a given unit is stamped on the back or bottom usually near where the cord goes in. If you just want to run a game unit probably 75W will do, and its cheaper than the 150W. FYI- WATTS add so if you run a DVD player that need 30W and a game unit that need 25W then your requirements are 55W+.
From radio shaft: "RadioShack 140 Watt DC to AC Power Inverter (220-0145)" I think the number is a part number you can go ask them about.
