Plug in is a must for these trucks at -10+C the only way mine will start is if i use my remote timer starting every 2 hours for 15 mins all night as well as being plugged in.
2 years ago when at work in ft Mac at -30C to -40C had to leave truck run for 7 days no plugg-ins at site no cold weather starter either
ya goig to get a timer today. what do you reccommend? every two hours four fifteen or like that then 2 hours before start. dont know what those timers can do

I am also from the upstate NY area. What is your strategy, you can check with the SCT. I am running innovatives tunes also. My truck smokes like a chimney with the Street and Tow tune, but the xtreme street is fine.
Eric told me I may have some injector issues but I am not buying into that...yet. I figure that if I had injector issues I would have a CEL, or codes atleast, and it would do it with the stock tune in it too... PM me and I will give you my phone number I am in the Schenectady area.
ya i have a CEL read the codes and it says p0672 and p0674 which turns out to be the glow plug number 2 and 4 ckt fault so looking into that just started the truck after being plugged in for about two hours. right when i start it it do does a little white smoke then clears after it is warm. i have the sct sf3 that what i read the codes with.
when i got it i thought it was the sct tuner that everyone says to get and ya this is a downloader from sct. has tunes from sct street, xtreme and two towing modes. but ya kinda wish i would of got the X3
i think rocknrotty is on the right track. i'd guess you've got egr cooler issues or headgasket issue.try taking the tuner off it and see what it does. if it don't smoke problem solved, but keep an eye on the water level.
I wouldnt be so quick to say that there is a problem. Talking withg my tuner, with the extremely cold wether up here lately the truck is overfueling on cold start with the tune only...which is normal.
I had the same problem as the OP and thought the EGR cooler was bad...turns out it wasnt, I had a bad EGR valve, excessive carbon build up in the intake, a bad turbo seal, nd a scoop was installed per a bulletin.
After all the repairs were done the truck was flawless, until I installed the tune. So I called my tuner and explained to him what was going on, he had me try a different one and all was good.
I wouldnt be worried about the EGR cooler or HG's unless I saw a significant loss of coolant without a leak.
now that i think about it i had a gpcm feed wire that was loose on the pass. side battery and when my truck finally started it smoked white/grey so bad you could've played soccer with the heavy cloud it left in the neighborhood. leave it plugged in if you can and cycle the glow plugs a couple times.
sarge ya i bought the tuner from xdp diesel and ya it comes with a few custom tunes. i cant change parameters but i can get ahold of people and have them make me a tune upload it on the device and load that on the truck thats what i understand
what is GPCM wire??? i have white smoe on start up but i also have glow plug issues first
