I have a problem. I recently did a flexplate/starter on my 84 f150. this truck is a I-6, c6 (i think) 4x4. it will not shift out of first gear now.
When i was putting it all back together, the torque converter didnt seat all the way, and i couldnt figure out why the bellhousing wasnt coming closer to the motor. i tried to run it in with the bolts. Could i have broken/bent something inside the trans (front pump?) to cause it to not shift?
Also, I've been told there are vacuum lines going to the trans that have something to do with shifting. where do these vacuum lines connect and would this cause my problem?
I had the smae problem, mine was the vacuum line, the c6 shifts without it but at higher rpm, it has nothing to do with the converter or the oil pump....
Did you seat the torque converter into the pump? There are 2 or more square ears on the pump drive and there are matching square notches on the Torque converter. WHen you seat the converter, you try to get the notcheds lined up as best you can and the as you gently slide things together, you should feel the converter kind of clunk into place. When properly mated the bell housing will mate with NO gap.
If you forced it together with the bolts, who knows what is broken. Probably some damage to the front of the pump housing along the input shaft.
If the pump is damaged, you may not have the proper pressures to make the tranny work.
I am not a tranny expert but I have been there done that with an old Dodge tranny and I think most are similar as far as the pump mating to the torque converter nose.
If your TC doesn't have the notches in the nose, ignore what I said.
