Brake controller question

My truck came with a brake controller in it, but it has a unhooked wire.

Coming out of the unit there is a blue wire (which I believe runs to the hitch) a black wire (which I believe is grounded currently) and a red wire. The red wire is cut about 2" out of the controller, and taped up with the other two. So I assume it wasn't used in the install, but I'm unsure. Would this just be 12v+ to run the little light on the front of the controller?

Can brake controllers work with just a ground in and back out?

Last but not least, does anyone recommend a good, but simple/cheap controller. I don't need anything fancy, I'll be towing a car trailer occasionally for a couple (>5) miles, so cheaper is better than fancy.

Oh, and to add, the controller I have is also plumbed into my brake lines.

I say this because the Googling I did found me some wiring diagrams for brake controllers that had a third or fourth wire that was used to detect when the brake lights were on.

So mine is hydraulically activated, with a red, blue, and green wire.
