trailer brake controller wiring question

I bought a tekonsha brake controller for my 02 ex. It has a statement that ford added a red with green tracer to the brake switch wiring which is only hot when the brake is depressed but goes to ground when the pedal is not depressed and not to use this wire as the input feed to the controller or it will short and ruin the unit. It says to use the light green wire as the trigger. Well I tested the light green wire and it goes to ground when the pedal is not depressed so I don't know how to proceed.
I used the factory pigtail harness to plug into the oe socket under the dash. The light green wire should be the trigger wire but as I noted it goes to ground with the pedal up. Help please. Thanks Anthony

Tekonsha does have a special pigtail you can buy made for the unit for Fords. It is about $15 or so. Simple plug and play.

I bought the connector to join the controller and the oe harness. I just noticed the light green wire went to ground with the pedal up.
