When I was little probaly 3-5 years old I would spend a lot of time at my aunt and uncles. My uncle would do all the woodwork. He done anything from little shelves to fancy furiture. He passed away in 1995. When I was about 12 or 13 I wanted to get into it so I bought a scroll saw, miter saw, table saw and drill press. I am thinking of trying to start making small stuff and trying to sell it. I could get a lot of the wood from my uncle since he is a carpenter and usually has leftovers. I am thinking of tying to get a bandsaw and router a little bit later. I plan on cleaning out a corner of the shop and setting up my stuff. Anyway I figured I would see if anyone else does this
I 'dabble' in woodworking.
Not so much now, as in the past.
Let's see:
I've got a decent table saw (contractor grade) that I've upgraded the pulleys and drive belt, and the fence. It is accurate. REAL nice cuts, with Freud blades.
Radial Arm Saw. I shouldn't have listened to a guy at work. Probably the LEAST used item in my workshop!
I could sell the Radial Arm Saw, and not even miss it.
Bandsaw. 12" throat.
Jointer. 6"
Routers (x2) Standard and plunge
Drillpress (x2)
Biscuit cutter
Finish nail gun.
Many chisels.
Cordless drills. (x2)
Dovetail jig.
I've got so much stuff in my workshop, I don't even remember what I've got!
My woodworking is mostly for enjoyment, and to make stuff for my family.
I've only sold a couple of items.
Adirondack chairs and I did sell a twin bed.
My wife wanted to make 'craft' items a bunch of years ago, but, I don't like 'mass producing' stuff.
I do. For fun and relaxation. I wouldn't recommend you buy the equipment expecting to make any money. Buy it only if you think you will enjoy the craft.
I am planning on making small stuff to start. Like little shelves boxes and stuff. MY uncle builds houses so I could get the scrap wood for free. I like working on cars but sometimes I want a brake for them
I built my own double hung windows and a bay window before, so I can be handy mandy when in the mood. You know, for cheap tools the stuff at Harbor freight isn't 1/2 bad.
but on a serious note a good friend of mine is a custom cabinet builder, when I was going to get a bigger refrigerator the cabinet over it needed shortened about 6 inches. John asked what I had for wood working tools as he would just do the work in my garage, when I told him I had a chain saw and a 20oz framing hammer he came over and removed the cabinet and took it to his shop and shortened it for me.
