On the last fill-up I noticed that the engine was noisier than normal and the miles per gallon dropped from 17.9 to 15.5. I know that the fuel companies do a winter mix but didn't know if it was for all areas of the country. My question is, being from the southern part of South Carolina, would the gas stations in this area be selling the winter mix or do I have another issue? I've got a 2001 EX 7.3. Thanks for the help!!!
Winter fuel isn't so much of a mix as a lighter diesel. They just keep taking stuff out to make it thinner - more like kerosene. Less MPG because there's less energy in it. If there's big rigs hauling out of your state headed north, the stations will likely sell winter fuel.
If you do find that kerosene is used in the fuel a new fuel filter should be in order. kerosene will clean the inside of your engine like you wont believe.last winter in Minnesota i put kerosene in the tank to keep my big truck from freezin up...I had a clear site glass on my fuel filter for ckecking water in the fuel and it was blacker then nite and was running rougher then normal. I had to drain the filter housing and r&r the filter.
