My 2008 F350 is now out of warranty and I'd like to get better fuel mileage. I was talking to a man who bought a kit from Rudys in South Carolina he says he's had no problems but he's only had it a couple of months. He said he now gets 23 mpg empty and 14 mpg loaded with a 40ft RV. I'm not interested in more speed just better mpg.
My question is which kit is best and has anyone had engine problems since doing the delete.
Thanks for any help and I know this has gone around before but I would like your opinions
Talk with Spartan Diesel Technologies or Innovative Diesel. Both haves tunes that are 300+ hp extra to the ground, Spartan I believe has a 350hp tune now. They both do very very well on tuning the transmission if you have a auto. If you tune you need trans tuning. I had both for my 6.4 excellent people to work with.
They both also have DPF on tunes as well, if you were interested.
I believe Rudy's deals with Spartan.

Reason: add info
there's no way he's getting 23, i've got a spartan w/dpf delete and I'm getting 17 highway at 60mph.
I bet he is looking at the LOM (mpg screen on the dash).. thats about what mine reads now with my Spartan and doc/dpf delete.
I just completed a full 400 miles towing my 7000lb show car enclosed trailer this weekend.. and the LOM held at solid at 14.7.. hand calculated 10.3.. which is an improvement from pre-Spartan of 8.9. (all at 70-72)
note that I am driving a DRW with 4.10 rear gears. I never drive it empty anymore.
I'm getting 14mpg empty and 9 mpg loaded. Is it really worth the time and money for 2 or 3 mpg increase.
I plan to tow 7-8000lbs for about 5k miles this summer.. so 9->11 is 100 gallons of fuel difference.. about $400.. 1/2 what I paid for the used Spartan.

Personally, I'd consider that a rhetorical question...
2-3 MPG is a realistic, but still an optimistic estimate over the 3-5 increased MPG that some people claim. Those numbers you quoted in your first post are definitely off the L-O-M and not accurate; hand calculating is the way to go.
With that being said and using an increase of 2-3 MPG when "Spartanized", and given your mileage of 9-14 MPG, you'd be looking at increasing your mileage anywhere from 14-33%; hence my comment about it being a rhetorical question. That comes under the heading "no brainer"...
Even with that estimate cut in half, 7-16%+ increase in MPG is nothing to sneeze at with fuel prices going through the roof.
Down side isn't an issue, you're out of warranty. Additional upside is the virtual elimination of fuel dilution, the subject of many a recent thread here lately.
The time to do it? If an intake, full DPF delete, exhaust install and tune load take you more than a day to do; you're doing it WAY wrong.
So in actuality the only real question is, what are you waiting for?!
I have been spartan tuned since the truck had 4K miles on it... the truck is just under 50K at this point. So in 46K miles, I have never run anything less than 210hp tune, mostly the 250hp tune, and am currently running the 300hp tune. I have the dpf/cat delete, 4" ceramic coated down pipe, otherwise stock exhaust, AFE stage II intake, and the dashdaq to monitor it all.
If you put fuel savings, and all the other positive things removing the DPF and cat do aside, and just talk about the way the truck feels, drives and the way it performs, you will definitely tune it. After I tuned this truck, it became something that was more powerful, more responsive, more efficient, and just a more enjoyable all around ride. Let me put it this way... if for some reason I was forced to sell my tunes, I would sell the truck. That is how much better of a truck it is when it is tuned properly. I have no idea how people even drive the truck stock. The initial turbo lag is the most ridiculous, unsafe trait on this truck and it should never have been sold to the public in such condition.
Oh and as for the fuel savings, yes, it def makes a significant difference.
Hahahah best of luck!
Ok the guy I talked to has a SCT9625OR Livewire with delete kit. Would this be a good kit? Thanks for all the help.
Joe
"Canned" tunes are JUNK, period! Unless that LiveWire has Eric's Xtreme tune package on it (Innovative Diesel Performance) FORGET IT! The other issue with the LiveWire is its horrific display; there's no way you're mounting it to use it for gauges; it's exceptionally cumbersome. Separate gauges, like the Edge CTS are nice to have for DD's, and a requirement for towing. Spartan's DashDaq has an exceptional display...
Other canned tunes like those found in Edge, Superchips, Diablosport Predator, Bully Dog, etc. aren't remotely as capable as extracting the reliable performance and MPG increase that you can get out of Spartan, H&S and the aforementioned IDP LiveWire.
I have a virtual twin of my truck running around here locally that thought he was the shiznit with his Edge tuner...my buddy's F350 with Spartan's DPF-on 150HP tune schooled him soundly; and with the 275 it made him look like a gasser. I can't wait to cross paths with him running my IDP Xtreme Street...he seems to be keeping a rather low profile lately...
If you're going to do a full DPF-delete and come to the Dark Side, do it right the first time, or you're gonna end up spending the same money twice.
many diesel shops sell the SCT.. My local shop said, SCT for mileage, Spartan for power.

There is a MONSTEROUS difference between an SCT/LiveWire with canned tunes and one loaded with Eric's tunes from Innovative Diesel Performance...there's no comparison between the two except that they use the same device to load the tune.
Eric's Xtreme Street tune is good for 280+ RWHP over stock, and his Xtreme Race is good for 300+ RWHP over stock. My buddy is running Spartan's new 300HP tune in his F350, and even though he has traction bars and I don't, we both agree that my Xtreme Street tune would give him a serious run for the money. After briefly running the Xtreme Race tune for S&Gs (you know what and Giggles) I'm fairly certain I'd pull him in the 1/4 mile...
As far as mileage is concerned I'm enjoying a 1.6 MPG HAND CALCULATED increase in the short amount of time I've been tuned, with a fairly heavy foot on occasion. My buddy is doing a little better than that, 2+ (not quite 2.5) MPG and he's been tuned for almost 40K miles...
