Question Automatic column in a 5 speed

My truck was a recovered stolen when I bought it. They reamed the ignition cylinder out so bad that it ruined the column. It's an 88 or 89 5 speed with cruise, and I'm having a hard time finding one for it.
I'm swapping to a 96 Super cab Short bed body in the spring, so I'll prolly wait till then to just use the 96 column. The 96 is an automatic. So I need to know what insight/experience some of you guys might have concerning using an automatic steering column in place of a man trans column? I don't have access to the automatic column right now, but I'm wondering if I can just leave some shifter parts off of it, and everything else will work fine. I realize that I might have a hole in the collar where the auto shifter was, that's not a big deal, I might put a little shift light in it!

It will work just fine as long as you don't mind the collar with the hole in it for the auto shifter.
