The problem is, the Mitsubishi and Isuzu engines are very rare in the US, the Cummins is too large, the smaller Cummins is not that common and is more for tractors and industrial equipment and would require a fair amount of fabrication to get a transmission that is compatible that can go over 35 mph. The Perkins is an option, but again, what transmissions does it mate up to?

The I4 and I5 Mercedes diesels are in my opinion the best choices. They are easier to get both an engine and a trans that can be swapped.

Mercedes engine controlled with CRD unit that work with WSP immobilizer only, so you can fit it in Aero with all Mercedes electronics.... I can do it, becouse I work for MB Dealer, I can easily programm keys, what haker can programm locked with security bit Motorolla processors? I have X-rpog that cracks M68...
And Mercedes engine is taller, so you will cut and weld oil pan and air itake, then you will put intercooler at tranny cooler place...

So IMO, it is the difficult but good way, you'll get small 160 HP at 4200 RPM engine that may let old aero run faster 100MPH...

What about the 80s era Mercedes sedans? Those don't seem to have too many electronics.

no electronics, fixed injection timing, no turbo, no power. In 90-s when there was oil crisis in ex-USSR we used to put this engines (not only from cars, but from light trucks) in old Volga cars. So we got reliable, hight MPG, but not fast cars. Volga with 2.4D from mercedes E240 runs lilke a truck, but low end torq. is amazing, it is impossible to stall engine when you release clutch pedal in 1st gear w/o adding gas. Starts!!!!

BTW. All Mercedes diesel engines for cars and light trucks have oil pump in front of engine, so OIL PAN DOES NOT FIT ford light trucks and what to do, U anderstand... Argone welding easily solves this problem, and U can increase oil pan size up to 2 gal. of oil. It logns engine life, especially of diesel engine

My dad's 84 320TD has a turbo and has plenty of power. Around here I do see them all the time. I'm not sure how many are in the yards.

320 L6 is a good engine, unfortunatly no varuable injection timing.

Well, this week I will try to find these engines here at JY to post shots and U will see what mods you will do to fit it in aero.
