Wheel nut locks...

If you ever buy a vehicle with these ''nifty'' devices to be sure to get that dang key with the vehicle. I didn`t check till yesterday when I went to buy new tires for Lincoln, after checking the entire car 3 times I didn`t find any key!
Anyone have any tips on how to remove the locks?

You can get lugnut remover sockets but for best results they are best used with an impact gun. We got them at work.

Thanks Nathan.
The tire shop had these lug nut remover sockets but they were worn out from use, abuse.
I`ll have to drop by your shop if I can`t find any, I got to get my new tires installed soon.

Pretty much what Nathan said. Sometimes they have to be torched out, and change the stud after that. (that can be tricky too, you have to be really careful)

Ive removed plenty by hammering a "special" worn out socket on them and using an impact.

Your tire shop SHOULD be able to get it off, I learned how to do that very quickly when I first started.

On Edit: I was at princess auto the other day, and I seen they had a socket set for sale that might have the right style for ya too, maybe check that out.

I thought of that but there is no room to torch it out but the mag wheel is too thick to try that without damaging it.
The tire shop tried hammering on a socket on the nut but it`s on too tight and wouldn`t budge.
I wish the tire shop could have removed these locks but no such luck with a worn out socket.
When I get time I`ll check out Princess Auto or try another tire shop. Do you remember the price of the sockets off hand?

Ill be honest Morris, i didnt look at the price, I just happened to notice them while I was looking for something else.

Torching is never the first option, usually the last. You would be surprised at a few of the lugnuts we had to remove from time to time. Like I say you have to be very careful, but they can be done, although thats always the last resort!

I remember the shop foreman doing one and wrecking a rim too, its not like that cant happen.

If it was an ordinary steel rim there would be more room making it alot easier to do. If all else failed with a steel rim I just might be tempted to do that in the end.

Yeah like I say, ive done a few on aluminum rims, it aint fun, but sometimes ya do what ya gotta do!

Looks like a set of those sockets is 10-20 bucks. Cheaper then a new rim

Buy a good quality lug nut remover. Don't cheap out. I had to buy one from the Mac guy and had it sent up on the bus pronto as I lost my stupid wheel nut key. Threw them all away and went with plain old lug nuts. No one steals rims anymore

A cheapy will get one off, once, IF thats all ya ever need!

You can also weld a nut onto the end of the lug nut.As a bonus the heat from the welding makes it easier to remove.

I welded a nut on to the nut last time, this time there isn`t quite enough room as the mag wheel is alot thicker on the Lincoln. It could still be possibly done but first I`ll try using the socket, that should work.

air hammer!!

haha i dunno but if i was you i'd tell those guys i'm takin the car somewhere else if they can't get them off... they probably just dont want to be liable for effing up the rims.. but still, you are a tire shop, do it up!

i dunno maybe its just me? but i seem to have an attitude with tire shops... they make it seem like everything is so hard and difficuilt and that its the end of the world if somethings up, and that they run the show... i've told off many tire places and i keep going else where haha
