Question Tranny engaging hard, please help--

I've posted a couple times about this problem, hopefully this post will get an answer. Ughh, i hope its nothing major---please help.

2002 Mercury Mountaineer 4.0L V6 4x2 96k miles.

Ok, so my foot is on the brake pedal and i pull the selector from park, neutral, or reverse down to Drive...when i release the brake pedal there is a very noticeable "slam" or "clunk" im not quite sure if its the transmission engaging or has to do with the drive shaft or the rear differential. I need some input though guys. I hate the sound and the feel, it make me so tense . I hope it is something simple or inexpensive. For the record, the transmission shifts smooth while driving and the vehicle has been very well maintained. But I know there is something going on somehwere from the tranny to the rear end, something aint right.

if the slam and clunk came when you put it in gear I would suggest checking the Ujoints. You said it does not slam until you take your foot of the brake....hhhmmmmmm.....does it happen everytime

I'll check the u-joints. But yes, you know how you put your foot on the brake to go to different gears and let off to start moving..? Well, i put my foot on the brake and pull the selsctor to Drive, I take my foot off the pedal to start moving and I definitly feel it and hear it engage. It does it everytime i put it in drive and take my foot off the brake, its a thump or clunk or slam(not sure the best word to use) but I wish I knew what was happening. Anymore thoughts/ideas? Thanks in advance

Bump!
Anyone?
Maybe some more ideas? Try a better explanation. First off, the tranny shifts very smooth while driving, very good pull through all gears. When it is sitting in park, you get in apply the brake and go to reverse(usually smooth operation) after backing out of your drive way you apply the brake again and put it in drive...then you feel and hear this thud under the vehicle. Out of everyones expertise, what is yalls thoughts on my different possibilities.
Transmission problem? Driveshaft, u-joints going bad? Or rear diff problem?
The vehicle will be home tonight, i'll check for play in the u-joints, other ideas are appreciated.

Can someone tell me their maintenance on the rear diff? According to the factory maint. guide, the differential never gets serviced? Hard to believe that can be good...? Thanks for all your help everyone--

well, nothing is maint free in my opinion. Got our truck at 25k miles. First think i do is change oil in trans, differentials, transfer case, then engine. Got to get the casting crud and initial wear particles out........ That being said, you got an odd one. If it was the drive shaft, converter, transfer case, or trans, you would think you would also have the problem when it was running down the road.... ONe other thought is loose mounts on the transmission to the frame? First thing i would do is jack it up and look, pry around. Next thing i would do is lay on the ground and look under truck while someone else shifts from park to forward with foot on the brake..... Dont crawl under the truck-- be safe.

Just a thought, but I'd look for a bad motor or tranny mount . With foot on brake, look for excessive movement in motor/tranny while going from drive to reverse etc.

Alright, well i dont have 4x4 components. however i do need to change the fluid in the rear end. What viscosity gear oil do you recommend for the rear end? And do i need a limited slip additive? Not sure if its limited slip or not.. so, i guess im gonna check the mounts and the u-joints, trans fluid level and change the rear end fluid. It was odd to me to, knock on wood though it drives and shifts awesome..Its just when ya first start out and put it in gear-- you get this thump and its quite nerve racking, i dont want the tranny to be going out. Thanks for the help and suggestions

the new standard for rear axle lube is 75 w 140 synthetic. Older lube was 80w 90 standard gear lube. either would be fine for a 7 year old 2 x 4. I prefer the newer lube in a 4 x 4. ----- look at rear axle mounts, spring hangers, also.

i, personally, would guess that your tranny gears just arent quite lining up inside, and when you let off the brake to start moving it allows to mesh and the gear kinda slams in. my $.02...

If my gears arent lining up right, what causes that, it shifts real smooth on the road.. Is that only repaired by a rebuild??
I will go with higher viscosity synthetic gear lube definitly, any additiives i should use?
