Tires

I'm due for new rubber. Has anyone ever tried Cooper Tires? Most of my driving is on pavement, but I drive a few hours in the winter to go sledding. Southern Ontario is bad for salt they use way to much which makes it slushy. I had BFG All Terain T/As on my Cherokee and they were great but there has been some that didn't like them on F-150s.
Any other brands anyone really likes.
Thanks

I have 275/70/r17 Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors on my truck and i love them. They are great on snow water ice or whatever you can think to drive on.

Tires, IMO the BFG's are noisy and give a bad ride, especially at slow city traffic speeds. They wear out quickly also.

I just installed a set of Cooper Discoverer ATR tires, size: 245/75R16 on my '98 F-150 4x4. They are an all season/M&S type tread. Good traction and smooth ride. Quiet tread but not as quiet as the Michelins below.
Cost now approx: $120 each. My son has these on his '05 Jeep Wrangler & his '82 Jeep Wagoneer (full size) and likes them too. Coopers are made in USA.

The tires I removed from the F-150 were Michelin XC/LT4 size: 245/75R16 Load Range E, all season tread, had 110K miles on a set of five (5) over 8 years, very good ride and quiet, did well in snow, rain, etc. Cost $150 each in 2001.
Cost now approx: $225 each.

Either are good, the Coopers have a better tread pattern for snow, as you may get more snow in Ontario than we do here in Western North Carolina (we do get snow, the DOT just lets it melt over the next day or so).

I have had both the Coopers and the GoodYears mentioned above. The Wrangler Silent Armor is one of my all time favorites, blows the BFG AT KO away. The Cooper ATR is a good long wearing tire with decent snow traction. I definately reccomend the GoodYears though.

Thanks for the input. I'm hoping to get rubber next week when I am off. Then some good lake effect snow to play in. I will post the choice and price soon. Now if I could convince the wife we need 2010 a sled.

For the money the ATR is a good tire.

I also like the BFG, but it won't have the life of the ATR, but it will have better traction in the mud and snow.

I have had excellent results with Coopers on several of the family's vehicles. Long wearing and seem to fit the bill for the price I paid.

Firestone Destination A/T - Very good tire, they are lasting me very well and get put to use towing, snow, ice, rain, mud. Very impressed over the last 40k probably will have then for 30-40 more.

I did consider the Coopers though when I got my tires.

I have the BFG All Terrain T/KO Radials and have no issues with them. They do give a louder ride than most tires, but they last a long time. I have about 60K on mine and not anywhere close to needing new tires. my truck is a 4x2 and have been able to climb a 4-5% grade from a dead stop in the middle of a blizzard with no issues. I know several others that have these tires and swear by them, but like I said will be a little louder and rougher riding than most tires.

I definately used to be a BFG AT KO devotee. I had them on at least half a dozen trucks. They seemed to lose some of that winter grip as they aged. I took a leap of faith with the Wrangler Silent Armor when it came out. They were slightly cheaper than the BFG at the time. I found them to last longer, ride better, and have much better winter grip. They were darn near bald the last winter I ran them. I still was confidently driving the mountain passes. Just soemthing to consider. The BFG is a great tire, the GoodYear is better. Just my experience.

I bought a set of Toyo open country ht's for the wife's suv. Very pleased. Wet and dry traction is greatly improved. Road noise is reduced. Handling and ride are impressive even in the mountains. Tire has stability shoulder ribs to reduce tire shoulder wear. 15k on these tires and they look brand new. Plan to put a set on my expy in a month or two.

I've got BFG Mud Terrains(our roads are horrible year round, muddy or drifted depending on the time of year) and have no issues with wear. They are a little noisy between 35-45 but other than that no complaints. Gets around better than my friend's Hankooks do.
