The kits can run between $350 and $800 depending upon type of wood, alum or steel metal strips, type fasteners, etc. It's been at least 10 yrs. since I purchased entire short flareside from Obsolete Ford parts, who eventually changed their name to Osolete Classic Auto Parts after being harassed by FoMoCo. Have not purchased from them since they changed their name many years ago so can't vouch for quality; however, used to buy from them exclusively because of the quality of the merchandise. Imagine majority of the Ford Parts Supplier's; D.C., Carolina Classics, etc., carry them. Also seen kits on ebay.
Posting link to Obsolete, can check out prices and compare, also see what options are available. Could not link directly to 'pickup bed', need to go to the 48-79 pickup shopping cart then open the "pickup bed" menu.
Bruce Horkey makes the ShowDeck which sits on top of a metal (or wooden) bed and can be removed in a few minutes in two pieces. Nice look but it is $1135 for the SWB plus shipping.
Sorry, failed to notice topic is on styleside. BikerDude, what a great source , noticed they actually have a kit for converting the Ford metal bed to wood, definately bookmarked for future references. In my case, not sure the 'ShowDeck' would work, there are couple sections where prior owner removed couple sections of the bed to install external tanks, have to look into it. Putting project on the 'to do list' some time down the road. The conversion kit may be a good alternative; meantime, keep my eye out for a styleside bed in good conditionon. Came across a 'how to do' article on converting metal to wood bed in Classic Truck Magazine, it was done on a 'bow tie' pickup but steps should be simular/same. Article can be found in Classic Truck online 'tech' section under metal to wood pickup bed conversion.
Couple members posted pic's of their bed repair projects, bookmarked couple, if run a search and narrow field to 61-66 forum should find more info. There was a thread where member posted pic's of a bed that was one step removed from the bone yard and came out looking new. Talk about making a 'silk purse out of a sow's ear'.
Yep I know that it's not a stepside and styleside's never had a wood bed. It's for my dads 65 and he loves wood and so do I. The bed he has is pretty good but does need a little bit of floor work and I was checking options.
I saw this company at SEMA in Vegas and there product looked pretty good. They have the kits for just about any truck. Bed Wood and Parts
There kits sit on top of the metal floor.
Hey guys, just got my wood bed delivered from Billy Banks out of Arkansas and wanted to put clear finish on the oak but not sure what type to purchase or how to apply either spray or roll on??Any help would be greatly appreciated!
