Question Trans up grad question.

I have a 76 E-250 with the c6 trans. Can anyone give me some advice on up grading the trans to one with an over drive and if its realistically possible. The truck has a 300 Inline 6 and it weighs in at over 8500 lbs. I just don't like driving at highways speeds with the three gears in the c6. Either that or I was contimplating finding a two speed rear to put under it.

Any advice anyone?

What axle ratio do you have? Will it pull an OD?

You will not find a 2 speed rear axle for that size truck.

You can swap to an AOD trans. The best are '88-'93. This was a trouble-plauged trans when intro'd, and the later years fixed most of the issues. You can also find beefed up units for $2000+.

AOD Performance Products - Baumann Electronic Controls

AOD Transmission from PATC, AOD Transmissions

TCI - Ford AOD, AODE and 4R70W

You can add an OD to the tail of the C6:

Gear Vendors under/overdrive transmissions the most awarded auxiliary transmissions.

The C6/GV combo would be the strongest.

Do not expect a 22% increase in mpg from a 22% OD though.

I agree, an over drive unit is probably the best bet if sticking with an automatic.
