Hey guys,
Well as you may know ive had some starting issues. i found this ignition boon top of the column) was really sloppy as well as the pot metal linkage. So as much as i like switches, i have decided to put in a switch for the ignition and accesories and a starter button. i know where im mounting them and i have everything disconnected but heres my question. with the plug pulled out from the ignition box, i have a bunch of wires. i kfigured out which ones were constant 12v and i found the four...yes 4 ground wires. so what are the other wires and how would you guys go about hooking up this setup. also, i would like the glow plugs to come on with the ignition switch, the controller is good so id like to keep it for now. let me know what you think
OK so it look like the red w/blue wire leads to the starter interlock and then to the starter relay. Thats how i would hook up the push button starter. But what about the accesories? (radio, fan, wipers, tank selector, and stuff like that)
RUN CIRCUITS grey-yellow red-light green black-light green
START CIRCUITS red-light blue brown-pink black-light blue purple-white
Run circuits you could use a master on/off switch
Start circuits use momentary push button (high amp type).
Anyone see anything I missed or mistake chime in.
well im getting closer to understanding. this diagram is for an 87 right? and motor size shouldnt matter. i dont have all those color of wiring. like the purple...not on mine. and there is some others too

I looked up 87 for you. I'll get one for 86 see if its a better match for yours. What month was your truck built?
Not to sure. id love to go and check the vin number right now but im sitting in a pair of sweatpants and theres a wind chill of -10. ill check it tomorrow. maybe an 86 would look more like what im seeing under the dash. Would i be stealing power from the twobig yellow wires that go into the connector? like i said before those two yellow wires have power going to them and then there are 4 wires that are acting like a ground. too many dern wires
Sorry so large. This covers gas/diesel so read carefully.
The grounds over on the right are to test the insturment lights when you crank the engine.
Black - Lt. Blue terminal P2 [relay 1] [momentary switch 1]
Purple - white terminal P1 [relay 2][momentary switch 1]
Working left from that section.
Brown -pink - to the fuel heater in start position on terminal 12 it looks like.
Black - Lt. Green looks like wipers, cruise control, radio, power windows on terminal A1. (Everything that comes on when the key is in acc. position) [relay 3] [switch 1 (Acc.)]
Red -Lt. Green - insturments, Fuel Shut off solenoid, fuel tank selector switch, fuel line heater, glow plug relay ign. term., timing advance, fast idle solenoid and the I terminal on the voltage regulator. Terminal 11 it looks like. [relay 4] [switch 2 (on)]
Red - Lt. Blue start position leave the switch and goes through the interlocks to the start relay, terminal ST. [momentary switch 1]
Grey - yellow picks up everything else that only works when the key is in the on position, blower motor, turn signals, reverse lights on terminal A2. [relay 5] [switch 2 (on)]
I think I would use five relays, one momentary switch and two regular switches. I would also use a keyed switch to disable all of the power into the switches.
WOW thanks for everything guys. Although the wire colors are different, im sure ican figure it out with all your helps. One last quick question. Dave you said to use relays...aren't all the instruments and stuff like that already have relays?...or is all that being bypassed by me doing this?
